Early life and background

Aafreen Vaz was born on 23 December 1990 in Mumbai and spent her early childhood in the city before moving with her family to Auckland, New Zealand at age 11. She attended Hasanat High School in Mumbai prior to the move and later returned to formal higher education that included study in New Zealand and India. Her parents are Calisto Vaz, a former infantry officer in the Indian Army, and Lucy Vaz, a former Air India air hostess. She has a younger brother named Aaron.

Vaz completed a Bachelor of Science at the University of Otago. While at Otago she spent a year working in radiation therapy and was awarded a scholarship from the Royal Society of Breast Cancer. She also studied medicine, earning an MBBS from AJ Institute of Medical Sciences in Mangaluru.

Career

Vaz has pursued parallel careers in modelling and medicine. In the pageant world she first appeared in public competitions while in college: in 2010 she competed on New Zealand’s Next Top Model, and in 2015 she took part in Campus Princess, a Miss India preliminary contest held at JIPMER College in Puducherry, where she won the title. That same year she achieved notable placements at Femina Miss India, finishing as first runner-up and receiving the Sofitel Miss Congeniality distinction, and she won the Miss Supranational Asia & Oceania title.

Her screen debut came in 2018, when she played the role of Mia in the film We Didn't Kill Mia. Alongside modelling and acting, Vaz has practiced in the medical field following her MBBS qualification and her earlier radiation therapy experience.
