Early life and background

Aarya Babbar was born on 24 May 1981 in Mumbai and raised in an environment steeped in theatre and cinema. He attended Methodist High School in Kanpur and went on to earn a B.Sc from Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University, Kanpur, followed by a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication from Mohanlal Sukhadia University in Udaipur. He also completed a short course in film appreciation at the American Film Institute.

He grew up participating in stage plays and worked with his mother’s children’s theatre group, gaining early practical experience both onstage and behind the scenes. In addition to theatre training, he studied acting under Kishore Namit Kapoor, learned action sequences from Bhiku Verma and Jabbar Khan, and took dance lessons with choreographer Saroj Khan.

Career

Aarya made his Hindi film debut in 2002 in Ab Ke Baras, a performance that earned him a nomination for Most Promising Newcomer at the Star Screen Awards. Over the years he built a varied screen career, appearing in mainstream Hindi films including Guru (2007), Ready (2011), Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola (2013), Bangistan (2015) and Hai Tujhe Salaam India (2022).

He has also worked in regional cinema, appearing in Punjabi titles such as Yaar Annmulle (2011), Naughty Jatts (2013), Heer and Hero (2013) and Gandhi Phir Aa Gaya (2020), and in Bengali cinema with Paapi Ek Satya Katha (2012). His Punjabi film Virsa (2010) is listed among his earlier regional projects.

Aarya’s television work includes mythological roles—he portrayed Vali/Ravan on the Hindi series Sankat Mochan Mahabali Hanumaan in 2015—and appearances in shows such as Darr Sabko Lagta Hai (2015). He was also a contestant on Bigg Boss 8 in 2014.

In recent years he has expanded into short films and digital projects. He has acted in short films including Bandh Tijori (2021), It’s Over (2023) and Pill Hai Ke Manta Nahi (2023), the latter of which he wrote and directed and for which he received recognition as a debut short-film director in 2023. On streaming platforms he has been seen in web series such as Fuh se Fantasy (2019, JioCinema), Runaway Lugaai (2021, MX Player), Pratiksha (2021, Ullu) and Duniya Gayi Bhaad Me (2023, Mask TV).

Aarya is the son of actor and politician Raj Babbar and theatre actor Nadira Babbar. He is married to Jasmine Puri; the couple wed on 22 February 2016. His siblings include Juhi Babbar and half-brother Prateik Babbar. His maternal grandfather was Sajjad Zaheer.

In 2020 he was attached to a proposed biopic titled Shashank, intended to depict the late actor Sushant Singh Rajput; that project did not proceed to release.
