Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury was born on 2 April 1956 in Berhampore, Murshidabad, West Bengal. He attended Gorabazar Iswar Chandra Institution for his schooling and later received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from the Sri Sharda Institute of Indian Management Research in New Delhi. Career

Chowdhury entered politics with the Indian National Congress in 1978. His early electoral contests included an unsuccessful run for the Nabagram Assembly seat in 1991. He won the Nabagram Assembly seat and served as an MLA from 1996 to 1999.

He was first elected to the Lok Sabha from the Baharampur constituency in 1999 and subsequently re-elected in 2004, 2009, 2014 and 2019. Over his parliamentary career he held multiple committee assignments: committees on railways, information technology, transport, tourism and culture, defence, energy and estimates; consultative committees for ministries including External Affairs and Food Processing; and joint committees such as the one examining telecom licence allocation and pricing. He was a member of the Railway Convention Committee and served on the committee reviewing the rate of dividend payable by the railway undertaking to general revenues.

Between 2012 and 2014 Chowdhury served as Minister of State for Railways. At the state party level, he has served as President of the West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee, first between 2014 and 2018 and again following a reappointment in 2020. After the 2019 general election he became Leader of the Opposition and on 24 July 2019 was appointed Chairperson of the Committee on Public Accounts. He also served on the Standing Committee on Home Affairs and on the General Purposes Committee of the Lok Sabha, among other parliamentary bodies.

Chowdhury contested the 2024 Lok Sabha election from Baharampur but lost to Yusuf Pathan of the Trinamool Congress by a margin of 85,022 votes.
