Early life and background

Adwaita Nayar was born on 16 August 1991 in Mumbai and grew up in the city that remains her hometown. She attended Cathedral and John Connon School and later Dhirubhai Ambani International School in Mumbai before moving abroad for higher education. Nayar completed a bachelor’s degree in applied mathematics at Yale University (2008–2012) and went on to earn an MBA from Harvard Business School (2015–2017). She is the daughter of Sanjay Nayar and Falguni Nayar.

Career

Nayar began gaining practical experience while still an undergraduate. In 2009 she spent three months interning with CARE in Tanzania. The following year she interned with Citigroup in London in the Industrials Investment Banking team, and in 2011 worked as an institutional equities summer analyst at Morgan Stanley in New York, where her responsibilities included emerging market equity derivatives sales and trading.

After graduating from Yale, she joined Bain & Company in Greater New York City as an associate consultant in 2012. During her time at Bain, conversations with her mother introduced her to the idea of building an online beauty-focused retail business. In 2013 she returned to India and joined Nykaa, the company her mother founded.

In 2018 Nayar launched Nykaa Fashion, a dedicated branch of Nykaa focused on apparel, footwear and accessories, and was appointed its CEO. The fashion business quickly became a significant part of the parent company’s portfolio and accounted for roughly a quarter of Nykaa’s overall business. Within a year of its launch she led a twelvefold growth of the platform and began expanding the brand’s presence offline by opening physical stores.

Nayar invested time in understanding regional markets and consumer preferences across India. By 2023 she had overseen the establishment of more than 140 Nykaa Fashion stores. Under her leadership the multi-brand platform grew to include over 2,000 national and international labels and introduced several in-house brands, including 20 Dresses, RSVP, Mixt, Likha and Pipa Bella.
