Early life and background
Ajaypal Singh Banga was born on 10 November 1959 in Khadki Cantonment, Pune, Maharashtra, India. He grew up in an Indian military family; his father, Harbhajan Singh Banga, retired as a lieutenant general. Banga attended St. Edward’s School in Shimla and Hyderabad Public School before studying economics at St. Stephen’s College, Delhi University. He completed an MBA at the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad, where he finished at the top of his class.

Career
Banga began his career in 1981 with Nestlé India, working in marketing and general management and later serving as a branch manager in Kolkata. After about thirteen years with Nestlé he moved to PepsiCo, taking on the role of director of marketing for PepsiCo Restaurants in India during a period of major economic change in the country.

In 1996 Banga joined Citigroup, ultimately serving in senior leadership for the Asia-Pacific region and on several executive committees. He later moved to the United States and in August 2009 became president and chief operating officer of Mastercard. He succeeded to the role of chief executive officer on 1 July 2010. As CEO, he led initiatives that expanded Mastercard’s reach globally and guided the company through the disruption of the COVID-19 pandemic.

After stepping down as Mastercard’s CEO in 2021, Banga joined General Atlantic’s BeyondNetZero in July 2021 and took on a vice president role at General Atlantic in January 2022. He also served as chairman of Exor and as vice-chairman of the New York Hall of Science board of trustees. Throughout his career he has been active in fintech forums and served on a number of corporate and nonprofit boards, including Craft Foods, Dow Ink, and the American Red Cross.

Public service and advisory roles
Banga has participated in public policy and advisory efforts. In 2015 he was a member of the President’s Advisory Committee for Trade Policy and Negotiations, and he served on the U.S. Commission on Enhancing National Cybersecurity. He co-founded the Cyber Readiness Institute in 2017 to advance cyber awareness. He has also chaired the U.S.-India Business Council, representing hundreds of global companies, and led the Partnership for Central America in collaboration with U.S. government officials.

Over his career Banga has received a number of awards and honors. These include the Foreign Policy Association Medal (2012), India’s Padma Shri (2016), the Economic Times’ Global Indian of the Year (2019), Singapore’s Distinguished Friends of Singapore Public Service Star (2021), and the Ellis Island Medal of Honor.
