Maken’s public life began in campus politics. In 1985 he served as president of the Delhi University Students’ Union, an early leadership role that launched his longer political career. He entered electoral politics in the early 1990s and was first elected to the Delhi Legislative Assembly in 1993 from the Rajouri Garden constituency. He retained that seat in subsequent state elections in 1998 and 2003.
