Early life and background
Akaash Singh was born on May 4, 1984, in Dallas, Texas. Raised in a family that valued education, he originally studied pre-med from 2002 to 2006 and considered a medical path early on. While still in high school he first tried stand-up at an open mic, an experience he did not immediately pursue again, but it planted the seed for a later career in comedy.

After graduating from Austin College in Sherman, Texas, Singh moved to Los Angeles in September 2006 to focus on stand-up comedy full time. His early years in Los Angeles involved lots of live work: performing at events, hosting multiple open mic nights each week, and steadily building his stage craft. In 2008 he relocated to New York, where he continued performing in comedy clubs and took on side jobs in the city’s comedy scene to support his touring and club appearances.

He exceeded 100,000 subscribers on his YouTube channel, earning the platform’s Silver Play Button in October 2020. In February 2022 he released a comedy special titled Bring Back Appu on his official YouTube channel; the special tackled themes of race and representation and reached more than a million views in its first week.
