Arya Banerjee, also known by the names Devdutta Banerjee and Arya Bandopadhyay, was born in Kolkata. Sources give two possible years of birth: 1980 and 1987, with the date commonly reported as 27 January. She was raised in a musical household: her father was Pandit Nikhil Banerjee, a sitar player, and her mother, Roma Banerjee, played the tamboura. Arya completed a masters degree in vocal Hindustani classical music.

She trained in acting, including a short-term diploma course at Actor Prepares, and also received training in dance, singing and martial arts.
