Asfar Hussain Biography
Pakistani singer, composer and songwriter from Chitral who rose to prominence through Nescafé Basement and as the lead vocalist of the alternative rock/pop
Early life and backgroundAsfar Hussain hails from Chitral in northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. Raised in a musical environment, he spent his childhood surrounded by family and community gatherings where poetry and song were part of everyday life. His elder brother played the Chitrali sitar, and Asfar learned to play several instruments himself, including rabab, guitar, tabla and the regional sitar.
He spent part of his middle-school years in Peshawar, where exposure to Pakistani pop music broadened his influences. After completing his schooling he enrolled at the National College of Arts (NCA) in Lahore, where he studied musicology and first emerged as a lead vocalist performing on the college stage.
Career
Asfar first gained national attention after appearing in the inaugural season of the television music show Nescafé Basement in 2012. Discovered during auditions at NCA, he performed songs that showcased his vocal range and musical sensibility and formed connections with fellow musicians on the show. Those collaborations evolved into the alternative rock and contemporary pop band Bayaan, of which Asfar is the lead vocalist and the member who suggested the band name.
Bayaan’s early original song Nahin Milta, written by Asfar, drew attention in 2015 and later appeared on the band’s 2019 EP 4 Saal, released by Rearts records. The EP included tracks such as Farda and Din Dhalay. Bayaan’s music reached wider audiences when Nahin Milta was included in the soundtrack of the 2017 Pakistani war film Yalghaar.
The band made a significant leap in visibility after competing in and winning the 2018 season of Pepsi Battle of the Bands. Their victory over rival band Xarb earned them a cash prize and an album contract with PepsiCo Pakistan, and helped solidify their fan base. Bayaan performed live at events such as the Pak Media Revolution concert in Lahore and announced their debut album Suno at the 2020 Lahore Music Meet; the nine-track album features songs like Teri Tasveer and Mera Musafir. Asfar has said that parts of Mera Musafir were inspired by the mountainous landscape of his hometown.
Bayaan continued releasing singles, including Bekhabar (2019), Aaj Bazaar Mein (2020) and Faryaad (2021), with distribution and licensing handled by Rearts records. In addition to his work with the band, Asfar has contributed to broader music projects: he took part in the multi-artist 2020 cricket anthem Khel Ja Dil Se for PepsiCo Pakistan and later appeared on limited-edition Pepsi bottle labels.
Asfar also worked outside of performing. While active with Bayaan he taught music and performing arts at a private school, balancing his musical commitments with a day job.
Public profile
Asfar is known for his vocal work and songwriting and has been recognized with awards for his music. Bayaan’s YouTube channel exceeded 100,000 subscribers, earning a Silver Creator Award in 2022. He has also collaborated with other noted artists: in 2022 he joined Brooklyn-based Pakistani vocalist Arooj Aftab on the Coke Studio rendition of the song Mehram.
Awards linked to his work include a LUX Style Award in 2022 for Best Song of the Year for Teri Tasveer and a Shaan-e-Pakistan Music Achievement Award (SEPMA) in 2020 for Best Lyrics for Bekhabar. Asfar has placed in music competitions beyond television as well; he took second place in the Thumri category at the All Pakistan Music Conference.
