Badri Seshadri Biography

Badri Seshadri is an Indian writer, software entrepreneur and political analyst from Tamil Nadu. A co-founder of Cricinfo, he has published books in Tamil和

Early life and background

Badri Seshadri was born in 1965 in Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu, and grew up in the same town. His academic path led him to the Indian Institute of Technology Madras, where he completed a Bachelor of Technology in Mechanical Engineering between 1987 and 1991. He went on to pursue a PhD in Mechanical Engineering at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, completing that degree in 1996.

Career

Seshadri’s professional life spans publishing, software and political analysis. In June 1996 he co-founded the cricket website Cricinfo and served as a director there until April 2005, working across operations, strategy and commercial functions. In February 2004 he launched New Horizon Media Private Limited and used that platform to distribute free software tools such as NHM Writer and a font converter.

He founded Kizhakku Pathippagam (Eastern Publishing House) and operated an online bookstore beginning in 1994. He has also been involved with publishing and editorial projects such as the online magazine East Today. In 2012 he became director at Aargee Staffing Services Private Limited in Chennai, where he worked with IT staffing. In 2014 he co-founded SynProSoft with a partner to provide IT solutions for small and medium businesses, particularly around the Zoho platform.

Seshadri is an author and translator. His body of work includes science-oriented and children’s books in Tamil and English, as well as translations of notable English titles into Tamil. His Tamil books include works on science, history and biographies; English titles he authored include general science subjects. Among his translation projects are Candide by Voltaire (via English), A Study in Scarlet by Arthur Conan Doyle, Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less by Jeffrey Archer, and other nonfiction translations.

Beyond publishing and software, Seshadri has taken an active role in heritage and publishing associations. He has served as assistant treasurer of the Tamil Heritage Foundation and has promoted archaeological awareness by sharing images and commentary related to ancient idols. He has participated in the Publishers Association Babasi and its technical forum Uttamam.

Public profile

Seshadri has appeared frequently as a political commentator and analyst on television and in online discussion programs. He participates in weekly online discussions, including a program called "Nanenda" on New Generation Television, and is regularly invited as a speaker by socio-economic and political organizations.

He has been involved in public advisory roles: following a change in state government, he was appointed to the advisory council of the Tamil Internet Education Council. That appointment ended in October 2022 when he was removed from the council after making critical remarks about a political founder on social media.

Controversies and legal matters

Seshadri’s public commentary has at times provoked controversy. In October 2022 his social media remarks about a former chief minister led to his removal from the Tamil Internet Education Council advisory body. In July 2023 he was arrested by Tamil Nadu police under sections of the Indian Penal Code after comments he made in a YouTube interview criticizing the Chief Justice of India and the judiciary’s handling of violence in Manipur.

Personal life

Seshadri is described as being from Chennai and Kumbakonam in Tamil Nadu. Physically, sources list his height as approximately 170 cm (5 feet 7 inches), with black eyes and salt-and-pepper hair. He is married, though public records in the provided material do not name his spouse.
