Balbir Singh Seechewal Biography

Balbir Singh Seechewal is a Sikh spiritual leader, environmental conservationist and politician from Punjab known for leading large-scale river restoration

Early life and background

Balbir Singh Seechewal was born on 2 February 1962 in Sichewali in Jalandhar district, Punjab, India. He completed his college education at DAV College, Nakodar, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree. He follows Sikhism and is identified with the Nirmala Sikh tradition.

Career

Seechewal came to public attention through his work with Shri Nirmal Kutiya in Sichewali, a connection that began in 1981. In 1988 he succeeded Sant Avtar Singh as head of Nirmal Kutiya. From the 1990s onward he expanded his activities beyond the kutiya, organizing village-level cleanliness campaigns and advocating for the revival and maintenance of local water sources.

His most widely noted project is the restoration and ongoing maintenance of the Kali Bein, a 160-kilometre rivulet that is a tributary of the Beas River and holds special historical significance in Sikh tradition. Working with members of the Ek Onkar charitable trust and community volunteers, Seechewal led long-term efforts to clean the waterway and restore its flow and ecology. The methods he developed in his native village of Sichewali—popularly referred to as the Seechewal model—were implemented across nearly 250 villages in Punjab and were recommended for adoption along many stretches of the Ganga.

Seechewal has overseen other conservation projects as well. He established plant nurseries in Sichewali and in Sultanpur Lodhi and distributes large numbers of saplings free of charge each year. In 1999 he launched the river-revival drive along the banks of the Chitti Bein at Shahkot. More recently, in 2018 he worked with volunteers and the Punjab Pollution Control Board to remove flow impediments from the Kanjili wetland. In 2024 he initiated a campaign to clean the Buddha Nullah rivulet modeled on the Kali Bein effort and negotiated with local farmers to maintain adequate flow from irrigation channels to help control invasive water hyacinth.

Recognition and public life

Seechewal’s environmental work has drawn national and international attention. Time magazine included him in a 2008 list of Heroes of the Environment in recognition of his contributions. In 2017 the Government of India honoured him with the Padma Shri for his role in environmental conservation in Punjab.

In addition to his environmental activism, Seechewal is active in politics. He represents Punjab in the Rajya Sabha as a member of the Aam Aadmi Party. As of April 2026 he remained the sole AAP Rajya Sabha MP from Punjab following defections by other party members.

Public profile

Seechewal is commonly known by nicknames that emphasize his environmental and social work, including Eco-Baba, Bein Wala Baba and Welfare Baba. He has used community mobilization, institutional partnerships and negotiation with local stakeholders to advance river-cleanup campaigns across rural Punjab.

Personal life

Seechewal is the son of Chanan Singh and Chanan Kaur. He is unmarried. His stated interests include reading and helping others.

Latest updates

In 2024 Seechewal launched the Buddha Nullah cleanup campaign and continued efforts to manage invasive aquatic plants by coordinating with farmers to ensure sufficient channel flows. In April 2026 he remained the only AAP representative in the Rajya Sabha from Punjab after other party MPs changed affiliation.
