Early life and background

John Lotts, known professionally as Big Boogie and sometimes billed as The Only Big Dude, was born on November 4, 1996, in Louisiana and grew up in Memphis, Tennessee. Raised in a middle-class Black family, he experienced early loss when his father died when he was a child. Big Boogie has described being close to his family during his upbringing; the household later suffered further tragedy when his brother was killed in an incident with Memphis police.

As a youth he gravitated toward music and rhythm. Teachers and neighborhood peers noticed his natural musicality; he joined a school band as a drummer and later developed an interest in rapping after friends encouraged him to try it. Before committing to music full time, he worked as a barber.

Career

Big Boogie first began sharing music more broadly in 2020 when he launched a YouTube channel called Big Boogie Music. That channel had amassed over 820,000 subscribers by 2024. The same year he signed with Collective Music Group, the label founded by rapper Yo Gotti.

His 2021 album Underrated contains 16 tracks and includes the single Pop Out, which has earned more than 60 million views on YouTube as of 2024. Earlier releases include Definition of Pain (2018). He continued to release projects through the early 2020s, including Definition of Big Dude (2023), REDRUM Wizard (Gangsta Grillz) (2024), and Ether (2024).

Big Boogie’s stage presence and growing catalogue helped him transition from local shows to wider attention. He has described treating music as a hustle that allowed him to earn money from performances and support his family. Early paid gigs — one of which netted him $500 — shifted his perspective from hobby to profession.

Personal life

Big Boogie is American by nationality and lists Memphis as his hometown. He stands about 5 feet 10 inches (178 cm) tall and has dark brown eyes and black hair. He has tattoos on both arms. His zodiac sign is Scorpio.

He is unmarried and has a daughter, Raya Joí Lotts, with rapper Reauna Shawdae. He has been linked publicly with Reauna Shawdae and with the rapper Trina. His father and brother are both deceased.

Big Boogie has spoken about struggles with anger during his late teens and about keeping a privately held unreleased song written for his father. He is also known to share images of himself smoking on social media.

Public profile

Big Boogie’s music presence includes multiple albums and a strong YouTube following. He uses social platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter to engage with fans. His associations include Collective Music Group, the record label that signed him in 2020.

Controversies and legal matters

In 2021, Big Boogie was among a group arrested in connection with a highway shooting in Mississippi in which one man was injured. The incident has been reported in media coverage.

Latest updates

Between 2021 and 2024 he released a steady stream of projects and continued to grow his online audience. His more recent releases listed include Definition of Big Dude (2023), REDRUM Wizard (Gangsta Grillz) (2024), and Ether (2024). As of 2024, Pop Out remains one of his most-viewed songs on YouTube, with over 60 million views.
