Bob Mackie Biography

Bob Mackie was an American costume and fashion designer whose career spanned decades and who became synonymous with glittering stage and screen looks. He’s

Early life and background

Robert Gordon Mackie was born on March 24, 1939, in Monterey Park, California. After his parents separated, he spent his early childhood raised by his maternal grandparents in Alhambra before moving to Rosemead to live with his father while attending high school. He studied at Pasadena City College and later enrolled for a year at the Chouinard Art Institute, where he left early after being offered work as a sketch artist.

Career

Mackie’s break into professional costume work came through studio and film jobs as a sketch artist. Early assignments included drawing the original sketch for the gown Marilyn Monroe wore at President John F. Kennedy’s birthday celebration, and working for established designers including Jean Louis and Frank Thompson. Costumer Edith Head brought him into film costume work in 1963, an experience he later said taught him how to manage relationships with producers, directors and performers.

Through the 1960s Mackie began building long-term relationships with performers. Mitzi Gaynor hired him to design an entire stage show in Las Vegas, launching a five-decade partnership in which he created stage and television-special costumes. He designed for high-profile television specials and concert productions, creating signature looks for Diana Ross, the Supremes, the Temptations and many others.

Mackie’s television work included a celebrated run creating every costume for The Carol Burnett Show across its eleven-year run; among those creations was the famous curtain dress from the Went with the Wind sketch. His television specials for Mitzi Gaynor earned him two early Emmy Awards in the mid-1970s.

He also designed for Las Vegas revues, creating elaborate costumes for long-running productions such as Hallelujah Hollywood and Jubilee. His sketches and drawings from these shows are preserved in archives that document Las Vegas production history.

Cher became one of Mackie’s most visible collaborators. He designed some of the singer’s most iconic red-carpet and stage looks, including the outfit Cher wore to the 1986 Academy Awards and the extensive costumes for her Las Vegas residencies and tours. He worked on Cher’s shows across multiple decades, including the Classic Cher engagements in the 2010s and the theatrical jukebox musical The Cher Show, for which he won a Tony Award in 2019 and where he also appears as a character.

Beyond live performance and television, Mackie worked in popular culture in other ways. In the late 1980s he collaborated with Mattel, designing limited-edition Barbie dolls and influencing changes to the doll’s face and hairstyle sculpts. His dolls promoted ethnic diversity and varied cultural dress, reflecting his long experience designing for many different performers.

Accolades

Over his long career Mackie received wide recognition: he earned multiple Emmy Awards (ten by the end of his life), three Academy Award nominations, and a Tony Award. In 2002 the Television Academy inducted him into its Hall of Fame. His nickname-laden reputation—Sultan of Sequins, Rajah of Rhinestones, Guru of Glitter—reflects the theatrical sparkle and imagination that became his trademark.

Public profile

Mackie’s work often combined technical craftsmanship with showmanship. He was known for dramatic evening gowns, inventive stage wear, and for adding character details that supported performers’ comic and dramatic choices. His designs for performers such as Whitney Houston, Elton John and Liza Minnelli—whose wedding dress he made in 2002—helped define moments in popular-entertainment style.

His sketches and costumes have been exhibited in museum contexts; the Palm Springs Art Museum honoured him at its Art Party gala in January 2026 and mounted an exhibition titled Reflections of Glamour, Bob Mackie, which displayed gowns and sketches spanning several decades.

Personal life

Mackie married singer and actress LuLu Porter (Marianne Wolford) in March 1960; the couple had a son, Robert Gordon Mackie Jr., known as Robin. Mackie and Porter divorced in 1963. From 1963 Mackie’s longtime partner was designer Ray Aghayan; the two remained companions and professional collaborators for decades until Aghayan’s death in 2011. Mackie’s son Robin, who worked as a makeup artist, died in 1993 at age 33.

Latest updates

In 2019 Mackie won the Tony Award for Best Costume Design for The Cher Show. Between 2008 and 2011 he designed costumes for Cher’s Las Vegas residency, and he continued designing for major tours into the 2010s and 2020s. A 2024 documentary, Bob Mackie, Naked Illusion, explored aspects of his personal and professional life. In January 2026 the Palm Springs Art Museum honoured him and displayed several of his gowns and sketches.

Mackie died on September 14, 2026, in a Palm Springs hospital from pneumonia at the age of 87. He left behind a body of work that shaped television variety, Las Vegas spectacle and pop-concert costume design for generations of performers.
