Early life and backgroundBoria Majumdar was born on 8 March 1976 in Kolkata, West Bengal. He grew up in the city and attended The Frank Anthony Public School before studying history at Presidency College, University of Calcutta. He went on to further study at St John’s College, Oxford, where his postgraduate work led to a doctorate focused on the social history of Indian cricket.

Majumdar built a career that spans journalism, academia and authorship. He has worked as a sports journalist and has contributed frequently to Bengali newspapers. His academic credentials include a DPhil on the social history of Indian cricket; his doctoral thesis, Twenty-Two Yards to Freedom: A Social History of Indian Cricket, was completed in the early 2000s and went on to be published in India.
