Challa Sreenivasulu Setty was born on 26 September 1965 in Peddapothulapadu, Telangana. He grew up in a Telugu family; his father ran a grocery shop in the village. Setty attended Mandal Parishad Upper Primary School in Alampur until seventh grade and later completed a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture at a college in Rajendranagar, Telangana.

Setty’s early years included practical exposure to money collection and lending practices in his village. From around the age of 12 he helped his family by collecting debts during school vacations, visiting many households in the area during harvest season to recover amounts owed to his father’s business.

Career

After completing his studies, Setty joined the State Bank of India as a Probationary Officer in 1988. Over a multi-decade career with SBI he has held a wide range of roles across domestic and international operations. His responsibilities have included positions in corporate accounts, mid-corporate banking and stressed assets resolution, as well as a stint overseas as Vice President and Head of Syndications at SBI’s New York branch.

Setty moved into senior leadership at SBI and served as Managing Director based in Mumbai beginning 20 January 2020. While in the managing director role he was assigned oversight of Retail and Digital Banking from 1 April 2020, and his remit later expanded to include International Banking, Global Markets, and Technology. He was reappointed to the Managing Director post on 20 January 2023 and continued to lead major business lines.

Within the bank’s governance structure, Setty participated across numerous committees. Between 2021 and 2022 he was a member of SBI’s Executive Committee of the Central Board, Audit Committee of the Board, Stakeholders Relationship Committee cum Customer Service Committee, Risk Management Committee, Board Committee to Monitor Recovery and the Special Committee for Monitoring Large Value Frauds. He also chaired the Corporate Social Responsibility Committee and the SASF Trust during that period, served as a director of the SBI Foundation and acted as Executive Trustee of the SBI Pension Fund.

Outside the core bank, Setty served on SBI General Insurance Co. Ltd.’s Bancassurance Committee and was part of the General Council of the National Co-operative Development Corporation (NCDC) from 2021 to 2022. He is a Certified Associate of the Indian Institute of Bankers (now the Indian Institute of Banking and Finance).

In June 2024 the Financial Services Institutions Bureau announced Setty as the 27th Chairperson of the State Bank of India, following its recommendation that he succeed as SBI chairman.
