Early life and background

Charithra Surya Chandran was born on 17 January 1997 in Perth, Scotland, and spent much of her childhood moving between the UK and India. She grew up in Oxford after periods living with family in Tamil Nadu and Liverpool. Chandran completed her schooling at Moreton Hall Preparatory School and later at Oxford High School, where she combined academics with national‑level participation in hockey and netball.

She read Philosophy, Politics and Economics at New College, Oxford, graduating in 2019. While at university she took part in theatrical productions and joined the National Youth Theatre. During her undergraduate years she also completed an internship with the Boston Consulting Group in their public sector practice and later worked part‑time at the New Policy Institute in London. Chandran took a one‑year break after graduating to pursue drama and ultimately chose to follow an acting career rather than accept a job offer from Boston Consulting Group.

Career

Chandran’s on‑screen career began with small roles in 2021. She appeared as a Bollywood dancer in the Marvel film Eternals and joined the cast of the second season of the television spy series Alex Rider as Sabina Pleasance. Before filming on Alex Rider had concluded, she was cast in what would become her breakout role: Edwina Sharma in the second season of Bridgerton (2022). That performance brought her wider recognition and industry attention.

Following Bridgerton, Chandran expanded her work across stage, screen and audio. She voiced the courtesan Camille for a BBC Radio 3 adaptation in June 2022. In 2022 she also appeared in the short film The Talents. Chandran made her West End debut in 2024 as Eileen in Instructions for a Teenage Armageddon. The same year she played the lead role of Amelia in the Amazon Prime comedy film How to Date Billy Walsh, and she took a lead acting role and an associate producer credit on the six‑part drama series Song of the Sun God, adapted from a novel by Shankari Chandran.

In 2025 she joined the live‑action adaptation of the Japanese comic drama One Piece in the role of Miss Wednesday. She has also appeared in the 2023 music video Mosquito and continues to take on a mixture of theatre, film and television projects.

Public profile

Chandran is British by nationality and identifies with South Asian heritage. She is multilingual, speaking English, Tamil and French. Trained in multiple dance forms including Indian classical dance, she also keeps an active fitness routine, practicing yoga daily, and enjoys surfing and karaoke in her free time.

She is engaged in charitable work and activism: since 2023 she has served as a global ambassador for Room to Read, an organization focused on providing learning resources and skills programs for children. She has spoken about women’s rights and supported charities that promote girls’ education. Chandran is publicly fond of dogs and visits her grandparents in India regularly.

Personal life

Charithra Chandran is the daughter of Palanichamy Chandran and Shanthi Chandran. She is an only child. Her family includes medical professionals and she spent part of her childhood living with her grandparents in Tamil Nadu. As of 2025 she is unmarried and based in the UK. Her listed height is approximately 5 feet 3 inches (160 cm). She has black hair and black eyes.

Latest updates

Across 2024 and 2025 Chandran broadened her screen and stage credits, with a West End theatre debut, lead film work, a producing role on a television adaptation and a part in the One Piece live‑action series. She also attracted attention at the Wimbledon Championship in 2025 for her appearance, and continues to balance acting with advocacy through her role with Room to Read.
