Chhannulal Mishra Biography
Pandit Chhannulal Mishra was an eminent Hindustani classical vocalist from the Banaras tradition, celebrated for his khayal and Purab Ang thumri singing. A
Early life and backgroundPandit Chhannulal Mishra was born on 3 August 1936 in Hariharpur, in the Azamgarh district of Uttar Pradesh. He grew up in a household steeped in music; his father, Badri Prasad Mishra, was himself a classical singer and provided Chhannulal with his first lessons. From an early age he showed a keen interest in singing and pursued more formal training as he moved to Varanasi to deepen his musical education.
In Varanasi he studied with Ustad Abdul Ghani Khan of the Kirana gharana and later came under the guidance of Thakur Jaidev Singh, who became an important mentor in his development. Mishra absorbed a range of regional styles and traditions from the Banaras musical environment, learning not only khayal and thumri but also other folk and traditional forms associated with the area.
Career
Chhannulal Mishra established himself first as a teacher and performer in Varanasi. He taught privately while building the skills and repertoire that would bring him wider recognition. Over time he became known for blending elements from multiple gharanas — notably Kirana and Patiala — and for reviving the Purab Ang style of thumri in Varanasi during the 1980s.
He developed a reputation for the emotional depth of his renditions and for accompanying himself on the swarmandal when appropriate. His stature grew through the 1990s after receiving the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1994, and he was subsequently listed among top-grade artists on both All India Radio and Doordarshan.
Mishra won numerous honours during his career. State and national recognitions named in his record include the Shiromani Award from Sur Singar Sansad, the Uttar Pradesh Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, the Naushad Award, the Yash Bharti Award, the Bihar Sangeet Shiromani Award, the Padma Bhushan in 2010 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2020. He was selective about commercial work, turning down offers he felt would compromise the integrity of classical music.
Though rooted in classical forms, he also performed beyond India. In the early 2000s he gave concerts in cities such as New York, Washington and Chicago, bringing the Banaras style and his interpretive command of ragas to international audiences. He also recorded for cinema at times, contributing songs to films including Aarakshan (2011) and Mohalla Assi (2018).
Public profile
Mishra was closely associated with Varanasi for most of his life, and his standing as a cultural figure extended into broader civic engagement. In 2014 he was among those who proposed Narendra Modi as a Lok Sabha candidate from Varanasi, and in 2015 he took part in the Clean India (Swachh Bharat) campaign as one of the nominated “Navratnas.”
He maintained a disciplined approach to his art throughout his life, carrying instruments such as the tanpura on tours and keeping a notebook for lyrics and ideas. His manner of performance emphasized the expressive possibilities of ragas and the traditional Purab Ang thumri repertoire.
Personal life
Chhannulal Mishra spent much of his life in Varanasi. He was married to Manorama Devi; after her death in 2019 he lived with one of his daughters in Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh. At the time of his passing he was a widower and survived by a son, Ram Kumar Mishra, who is a tabla player, and four daughters: Sangeeta (deceased), Namrata, Anita and Mamta Mishra. His family included other performers: brothers Pandit Vishwanath Mishra (tabla) and Pandit Shivjee Mishra (Kathak dancer), and a sister, Savitri, who was also connected to kathak.
Health and passing
In later years Mishra experienced a number of chronic health conditions, including kidney problems, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, osteoarthritis, benign prostatic hyperplasia and episodes of acute respiratory distress. He was admitted to BHU Hospital in Varanasi shortly before his death but was discharged after showing some recovery. Pandit Chhannulal Mishra died on 2 October 2025 in Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh, at the age of 89. His daughter Namrata Mishra confirmed his passing and the cause was given as age-related illness.
Legacy
Across a long career, Pandit Chhannulal Mishra was recognized for preserving and revitalizing aspects of the Banaras musical tradition, especially Purab Ang thumri, while also bringing classical music to audiences both in India and abroad. His awards and honors reflect a lifetime of commitment to the form, and his recordings, performances and students continued to carry forward the stylistic threads he championed.
