Early life and background

Chinmayee Gopal was born on 17 August 1984 in New Delhi and grew up in the city she calls home. She studied economics at Delhi University, completing a bachelor’s degree at Lady Shri Ram College before moving on to the Delhi School of Economics for her master's. Her academic focus on economics preceded a decision to prepare for the civil services exam, which she cleared in 2013 with an All-India Rank of 16.

Career

Gopal joined the Indian Administrative Service as part of the 2014 batch and was allotted the Rajasthan cadre. Following selection she underwent foundation training at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration in Mussoorie, where her training timeline extended from 2014 through 2016. During her training period she served as an Assistant Secretary in the Ministry of Labour and Employment from 2015 to 2016.

Her early field postings included roles as Assistant Collector and Executive Magistrate in Kota and Ajmer between 2016 and 2017. She went on to serve as Sub Divisional Magistrate in Bhilwara in 2017 and in Ramganj Mandi (Kota) in 2018. From 2019 to 2020 Gopal held the post of Chief Executive Officer of the Zila Parishad in Sriganganagar, and she was appointed CEO of the Zila Parishad in Bikaner from 2020 to 2021. Her appointment in Sriganganagar marked her as the first woman IAS officer to head that Zila Parishad.

During these local-administration tenures she developed a reputation for firm enforcement actions against illegal constructions and encroachments, and for addressing instances of administrative negligence. In 2021 she became the first woman IAS Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation in Ajmer. She later served as Joint Secretary in the Government Industries Department of Rajasthan and, in the late 2022 period, as Managing Director of the Rural Non-Farm Sector Development Agency (RUDA) in Jaipur.

In 2023 Gopal was appointed District Collector and District Magistrate of Tonk and subsequently of Jhunjhunu. As a district-level administrator she took notable disciplinary action against corruption, including suspending implicated employees, and engaged directly with villagers by visiting homes to hear and resolve local concerns.

In 2024 she was appointed Commissioner of the Agriculture and Panchayati Raj Department in Jaipur. That same year she was involved in a road accident while posted in Jhunjhunu; her vehicle sustained heavy damage but she escaped without reported injury.

In April 2026 Gopal was transferred to serve as the District Magistrate of Barmer, Rajasthan, taking charge as part of the transfer order issued on 1 April 2026. She succeeded Tina Dabi in Barmer, while Dabi moved to Tonk.
