David Cameron Biography

David William Donald Cameron is a British politician who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and later returned to government service. Born in 9

Early life and background

David William Donald Cameron was born on 9 October 1966 in Marylebone, London. He spent his earliest years in Kensington and Chelsea before the family moved to a rectory near Newbury in Berkshire. Cameron was educated at Heatherdown School and Eton College, then read for a BA at Brasenose College, Oxford, where he captained the college tennis team and was described by a tutor as one of the ablest students he taught. He comes from a family with Scottish, Welsh and English roots; his father, Ian Donald Cameron, worked as a stockbroker and his mother, Mary Fleur Cameron, served for many years as a Justice of the Peace.

Career

Cameron entered political work after university, joining the Conservative Research Department and later serving as a special adviser in the Treasury and Home Office. In the 1990s he worked briefly in media corporate affairs at Carlton Communications. He first contested a parliamentary seat in 1997 and in 2001 was elected Member of Parliament for Witney in Oxfordshire.

Within a few years he rose rapidly through the party: he served on the Home Affairs Select Committee, became shadow deputy leader in the House of Commons, and was appointed shadow education secretary. In December 2005 he was elected leader of the Conservative Party.

Following the 2010 general election, Queen Elizabeth II invited him to form a government and he became Prime Minister on 11 May 2010, leading a coalition government with the Liberal Democrats during a period that included the global financial crisis. His government introduced or oversaw several significant legislative changes, including the Fixed-term Parliaments Act 2010, the Academies Act 2010, the Education Act 2011, the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act 2013, and the Succession to the Crown Act 2013. In the 2015 general election the Conservatives won an outright majority, and Cameron continued as Prime Minister.

Following the 2016 referendum on the United Kingdom’s membership of the European Union, Cameron announced his intention to resign after the vote to leave. He formally resigned as Prime Minister in July 2016 and stood down from Parliament later that year. After time outside frontline politics he returned to public office in 2023 when he was appointed Foreign Secretary on 13 May.

Public profile

Cameron’s public life has included high-profile appointments and media appearances. In 2012 he was a guest on the Late Show with David Letterman. He has also held roles beyond Parliament, becoming president of Alzheimer’s Research UK in January 2017 and taking paid advisory and board positions in the private sector, including consultancy work for a genomics company and a vice-chair role at an investment fund, as reported in 2018.

Personal life

Cameron married Samantha Cameron, a businesswoman and designer, on 1 June 1996. The couple have four children: two sons and two daughters. Their children’s names and years of birth recorded in the public record include Ivan Reginald Ian (born 2002, died 2009), Nancy Gwen (born 2004), Arthur Elwen (born 2006), and Florence Rose Endellion (born 2010). Cameron has described his family influences publicly and has spoken about his father as an important role model.

Cameron’s interests beyond politics include tennis, cooking and writing. He has also published a memoir, For the Record, in September 2019. His background includes membership of university social circles and clubs during his time at Oxford, and a mixed record of public controversies and criticisms during his political career, including disputes over language used about migrants and comments caught in rehearsal that provoked local criticism.

Latest updates

Since leaving the role of Prime Minister, Cameron has kept a varied public life: taking on charitable roles, publishing his memoir, and serving in advisory capacities in the private sector. In May 2023 he returned to government service as Foreign Secretary, a position he assumed following a ministerial reshuffle.
