Dilip Chhabria was born in Mumbai in 1954 and grew up in a family involved in business. He completed a Bachelor of Commerce before pursuing formal training in transportation design at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. From an early age he drew cars regularly and credits seeing an advertisement for a California design school as the moment that set him on the path to a career in automotive styling.

Career

After finishing his studies in the United States, Chhabria worked with General Motors for a period before returning to India to build a design practice of his own. He began modestly in a small workspace within his father’s factory, initially producing an aftermarket horn for the Premier Padmini that sold well. His early independent projects included a modified Gypsy in 1992 that brought attention to his design skills and led to work with Mahindra on the Armada and concepts that contributed to development of the Scorpio.

Chhabria went on to found DC Designs, a firm that would become known for bespoke automotive work, vehicle customizations and concept vehicles. DC Designs produced show and custom vehicles for Bollywood films and for high-profile clients, and Chhabria’s portfolio expanded to include luxury conversions and vanity vans for well-known actors. In 2003 he was commissioned by Aston Martin to work on a show car, and later he designed the James Bond-inspired Aston Martin DB-8.

In 2015 Chhabria introduced the DC Avanti, a sports car developed and manufactured under the DC Designs brand and positioned as India’s first sports car. The Avanti was offered with a 2.0-liter turbocharged petrol engine and a 6-speed manual transmission, with a higher-output limited edition later released.

Outside of direct automotive work, Chhabria’s interest in visual arts is evident: he paints and sculpts, and his artwork features in DC showrooms in cities such as Delhi, Mumbai and Pune.
