Divya Bharti was an Indian film actress who rose quickly through Telugu and Hindi cinema in the early 1990s. Born in Bombay in 1974, she made a string of記
Early life and backgroundDivya Om Prakash Bharti was born on 25 February 1974 in Bombay (now Mumbai), Maharashtra. She grew up in Mumbai and attended Maneckji Cooper High School in Juhu, but left formal education after completing class 9. In her teens she worked as a model, appearing in photoshoots that led to acting opportunities.
Career
Divya began her film career in South Indian cinema. Her first screen appearances were in regional films: the Tamil film Nila Pennae (1990) and the Telugu film Bobbili Raja (1990), the latter earning her recognition and a Filmfare Award South nomination for Best Actress (Telugu) in 1991.
She moved into Hindi films soon after and made her Bollywood debut in Vishwatma (1992), which brought mainstream visibility. During 1992 she was especially prolific in Hindi cinema, appearing in several releases including Shola Aur Shabnam, Deewana, Dil Hi To Hai, Dushman Zamana and Dil Aashna Hai. Her song “Saat Samundar Paar” from Vishwatma became widely known and contributed to her growing popularity.
Divya worked across languages and continued to sign multiple projects; she was among the better-paid actresses of the early 1990s and reportedly signed more than a dozen Hindi films at a time. Her performances in Telugu films such as Chittemma Mogudu (1992) brought additional awards attention: she won a Nandi Award (Special Jury Award) and received another Filmfare Award South nomination in 1993. In 1993 she won the Filmfare Award for Lux New Face of the Year for Deewana.
A number of her films were released posthumously. Her final completed Hindi film role before her death was in Kshatriya (1993). Other films released after her passing include Shatranj and the Telugu release Tholi Muddhu, while several projects she had signed were recast and released later by producers.
Public profile
Divya was often described as lively and bubbly, traits that affected casting decisions in at least one instance when she was replaced in a film for being too vivacious. She was featured on the covers of magazines and performed in concerts both in India and abroad. Reported hobbies included swimming, dancing and lawn tennis, and she was known to be an animal lover. She spoke multiple languages, including Hindi, English and Marathi, and was sometimes nicknamed a “doll of Bollywood.”
Personal life
Divya married filmmaker Sajid Nadiadwala on 10 May 1992 in a private nikah ceremony. After marriage she converted to Islam and was also known as Sana Nadiadwala. The couple had no children. Her parents were Om Prakash Bharti and Meeta Bharti; she had a brother, Kunal Bharti, and a half-sister, Poonam Bharti. A paternal cousin is actor Kainaat Arora.
Death and aftermath
On 5 April 1993 Divya Bharti died at the age of 19 after suffering head injuries and internal bleeding following a fall from her fifth-floor apartment in Versova, Andheri West, Mumbai. Reports describe the fall occurring from a kitchen window that faced a balcony. She was taken to R.N. Cooper Hospital but did not survive. Her death drew varied media discussion about whether it was an accident, suicide or involved foul play; contemporaneous reporting included different accounts and later commentary. Some of her films were released after her death, and the circumstances of her passing have continued to be referenced in later works.
