Early life and background

Ela Ramesh Bhatt was born on 7 September 1933 in Ahmedabad, then part of the Bombay Presidency under British rule. Raised in a family with a legal background, her father Sumantrai Bhatt worked as a lawyer. She completed school at Sarvajanik Girls High School in Surat and pursued higher education at M.T.B. College, Surat, followed by law studies at Sir L. A. Shah Law College. Bhatt later obtained a diploma in labor and cooperatives from the Afro-Asian Institute of Labor and Cooperatives in Tel Aviv.

While still a student she took part in the first census of independent India, an experience that exposed her to widespread hardship and shaped her commitment to public service. Early in her career she taught English at SNDT Women's University in Mumbai before moving into labour and legal work.

Career

Bhatt joined the Textile Labour Association's legal department in 1955. Over time her work there led to her leadership of the association's women's wing in 1968. In 1971 she went to Israel to study labor and cooperative practices, earning an international diploma that informed her later organizing efforts.

Working with colleagues at the Textile Labour Association, Bhatt helped create a union for self-employed women. That effort culminated in 1972 with the founding of the Self-Employed Women's Association of India (SEWA). She served as SEWA's general secretary until 1996 and continued to build the movement's financial and institutional foundations; the Cooperative Bank of SEWA was established the year after she stepped down as general secretary.

Bhatt combined legal training, Gandhian principles and cooperative practice to develop nonviolent, community-based approaches to women's economic empowerment. Her work emphasized organization, collective services and locally rooted cooperative finance as ways for poor, self-employed women to gain security and voice.
