George Fernandes Biography
George Mathew Fernandes was a prominent Indian trade unionist and politician known for his long career as a labour organiser, parliamentarian and cabinet‑r
Early life and backgroundGeorge Mathew Fernandes was born on 3 June 1930 in Mangalore, Karnataka, into a Mangalorean Catholic family. He was the eldest of six children of John Joseph Fernandes and Alice Martha Fernandes. As a teenager he was sent to St Peter’s Seminary in Bangalore for priestly training but left after several years. He later attended St. Aloysius College in Mangalore before moving into labour organising and journalism.
Career
Fernandes built his public life around trade‑union activism and socialist politics. He began organising workers in hotels, transport and small‑scale industries in Bombay and served as a member of the Bombay Municipal Corporation from 1961 to 1968. He edited publications in Konkani, English and Hindi and rose through the ranks of the socialist movement in the 1960s and 1970s.
His electoral breakthrough came in 1967 when, running for the Samyukta Socialist Party, he defeated veteran S.K. Patil. That victory brought him national attention and the nickname “George the Giantkiller.” He became General Secretary of the Samyukta Socialist Party in 1969 and was named chairman of the Socialist Party in 1973. In 1974, as President of the All India Railwaymen’s Federation, he organised a major railway strike that mobilised around 1.5 million workers.
Fernandes authored several political books, including What Ails the Socialists (1972) and his autobiography George Fernandes Speaks (1991). In 1994 he founded the Samata Party. Nationally, he is perhaps best known for serving as India’s Defence Minister from 1998 to 2004 in the second and third National Democratic Alliance governments, a period that included the Kargil conflict and the Pokhran nuclear tests.
Public profile
Throughout his life Fernandes combined parliamentary roles with active trade‑union leadership and outspoken positions on national and international issues. He was a member of organisations such as Amnesty International, the People’s Union for Civil Liberties and the Press Council of India. Known for his multilingual abilities, he spoke ten languages including Konkani, Tulu, Kannada, English, Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, Urdu, Malayalam and Latin.
His public life was also marked by controversy. He resigned from the defence portfolio after allegations surfaced during a sting operation; later, the Central Bureau of Investigation filed an FIR in 2006 concerning an arms purchase. He faced criticism for his positions on several secessionist movements and for other procurement‑related allegations. Legal and political challenges followed him through different phases of his career.
Personal life
Fernandes married Leila Kabir, daughter of former union minister Humayun Kabir, on 21 July 1971. The couple had one son, Sean Fernandes, who became an investment banker. The marriage ended in separation in the mid‑1980s. In later life he was sometimes seen in public company with Jaya Jaitly.
Health and death
In his later years Fernandes suffered from Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. He underwent treatment in 2010 and, by his eightieth birthday, had significant memory loss noted by family and close associates. He died in Delhi on 29 January 2019 at the age of 88; Alzheimer’s disease is reported as the cause of death. Posthumously, he was awarded the Padma Vibhushan in 2020.
Latest updates
Fernandes remains a figure of enduring interest for his role in Indian trade unionism and coalition politics. His writings and memoir continue to be referenced in discussions of socialism, labour rights and the politics of the late twentieth century in India.
