Rupinder Singh Grewal, known professionally as Gippy Grewal, was born on 2 January 1983 in Koom Kalan, Ludhiana, Punjab. Raised in a middle-class family, he attended Nankana Sahib Public School in Kot Gangu Rai and later studied at the North India Institute of Hotel Management in Panchkula, where he earned a degree in hotel management. His parents are Santokh Singh (late) and Kulwant Kaur, and he has a brother, Sippy Grewal, who works as a film producer. Grewal follows Sikhism and lists Chandigarh as his hometown.

Gippy Grewal began his public career as a singer. His recorded debut came in 2002 with the song "Chakk Ley" featuring Jagdev Maan. He built a catalogue of popular Punjabi tracks that includes titles such as "Angreji Beat," "Hello Hello," "Oscar," "Desi Gana," "Bad Baby," "Pind Nanke," "Channa," "Massi," and "Dubai Wale Shaikh."
