Early life and background

Maramreddy Harishankar Reddy was born on 2 June 1998 in Nagurivandla Palli village in the Kadapa district of Andhra Pradesh. He grew up in the nearby hometown of Chinnamandem and attended Swetha High School there. His father, Ramachandra Reddy, worked as a farmer and his mother is Lakshmi Devi. Harishankar has one brother.

He began playing hardball cricket comparatively late, taking up the game around age 14 after attending a district under-14 selection trial in 2012. Limited cricket infrastructure in his village prompted a move in 2016 to Vizianagaram, where he enrolled at the ACA Academy Ground to develop his bowling.

Education and profile

Harishankar completed a graduate-level education. He is Indian by nationality and is unmarried. Physically, he is listed at about 177 cm (approximately 5'10") with black hair and black eyes. His zodiac sign is Gemini.

Career

Harishankar is a right-arm fast-medium bowler who bats right-handed. After progressing through age-group cricket for Kadapa, he represented Andhra Pradesh at under-19 level and made a strong impression in domestic T20s.

He debuted for Andhra Pradesh in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in January 2018. In his first T20 match for the state, against Kerala on 11 January 2018, he took four wickets and conceded 12 runs in his two overs. That performance helped establish him as a promising pace option for his state side.

On 20 February 2021 he made his List A debut in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and has been a regular part of Andhra Pradesh’s domestic squads since then. Harishankar has been coached by C.D. Thomson during his development.

IPL and franchise cricket

In the Indian Premier League auction held in February 2021, Chennai Super Kings acquired Harishankar Reddy for his base price of Rs. 20 lakh. He wears jersey number 46 when associated with the franchise. During a pre-season practice session ahead of the 2021 IPL, he drew attention by clean-bowling MS Dhoni.

Playing style and influences

Harishankar bowls right-arm fast-medium and bats right-handed. He has cited Jasprit Bumrah as an idol and looks up to the pace bowling standards set by top Indian bowlers. Among batsmen, he lists MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli as favorites.

Public profile

Harishankar remains an emerging domestic cricketer who has not yet made an international debut. He is the second cricketer from Kadapa district to be bought by an IPL franchise; the first was Vijayakumar, who played in the inaugural IPL season in 2009.

Personal notes

Family interviews and reporting note that during his college days Harishankar sometimes skipped classes to focus on cricket practice as he pursued his sporting ambitions. His upbringing in a rural district and the later move to a cricket academy reflect the pathway he followed to reach state and franchise cricket.

Latest updates

Harishankar continues to represent Andhra Pradesh in domestic competitions and remains associated with Chennai Super Kings following the 2021 auction. He wears IPL jersey number 46 while with CSK and continues to develop as a pace bowler in domestic and franchise environments.
