Early life and backgroundHimani Bhatt Shivpuri was born on 24 October 1960 in Dehradun, Uttarakhand. Raised in a household that encouraged learning and the arts, she completed a BSc and an MSc in Organic Chemistry. While pursuing her postgraduate studies she became active in theatre, often performing in the evenings while continuing her academic work. Her father, Haridutt Bhatt Shailesh, who taught Hindi, is frequently credited by Shivpuri for encouraging her to follow the dramatic arts.
Shivpuri attended Doon School in Dehradun and later earned a place at the National School of Drama, joining its 1984 cohort. She reportedly turned down a scholarship opportunity to study in the United States in order to train at NSD. Early in her career she worked with the NSD Repertory Company.

Himani Shivpuri made her film debut in 1984 with Ab Ayega Mazaa and first appeared on television in the series Yatra in 1986. From these beginnings she moved fluidly between stage, film and television work.
On the big screen she became widely recognized for her supporting roles in mainstream Hindi cinema. A notable early mainstream credit is her portrayal of Razia in the 1994 family drama Hum Aapke Hain Koun.
