Early life and backgroundRajiv Kumar, who uses the pen name Jaani, was born on 25 May 1989 in Gidderbaha in the Muktsar district of Punjab, India. Raised in a non-musical family, he was drawn to writing from a young age. His grandmother used the nickname Jaani for him, and he later adopted that name professionally.
He completed his schooling at SSD Memorial School in Gidderbaha and pursued higher education at Rayat Bahra University in Mohali. After graduating and obtaining a diploma in hotel management, he moved to Chandigarh in 2007 to further his studies and to pursue opportunities in the Punjabi music industry.
Career
Jaani began writing songs professionally after finishing college in 2012. His earliest credited work as a lyricist includes the film Sant Sipahi (2012). He wrote an unreleased song titled "Kaabil" early in his career and received a modest payment for his debut released lyric.
He first gained widespread attention with the song "Soch," performed by Hardy Sandhu. Jaani wrote the lyrics for that song while he was in his final college semester. The success of "Soch" in 2013 brought him into the limelight and led to ongoing collaborations with Hardy Sandhu, music producer B Praak, and director Arvindr Khaira. Working as part of that creative team, he contributed lyrics to a string of popular Punjabi tracks such as "Jocker," "Backbone," and "Horn Blow."
