Early life and background

Jason David Frank was born on September 4, 1973, in Covina, California. Raised in the United States, he attended Bonita High School in La Verne, California from 1987 to 1991. He identified as Christian and had a lifelong interest in martial arts and action sports, including parachuting.

Career

Frank broke into television as Tommy Oliver, the Green Ranger, in the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers series in 1993. That role became the defining credit of his career: he returned to the franchise repeatedly over two decades, appearing in Power Rangers Zeo (1996), Power Rangers Turbo (1997), Power Rangers Wild Force (2002), Power Rangers Dino Thunder (2004) and Power Rangers Megaforce (2013). Across television and film he portrayed several different Ranger identities, including Green, White, Red and Black variations of the character, and made additional episodic appearances in later series such as Power Rangers Super Megaforce (2014) and Power Rangers Super Ninja Steel (2018).

His film credits include Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie (1995) and later appearances and cameos tied to the franchise, including a citizen cameo in the 2017 Power Rangers film. In 2018 he appeared in the documentary Making Fun: The Story of Funko. Frank also lent his voice to video game projects connected to the Power Rangers property, including voice work for the 1995 movie tie‑in and Power Rangers Dino Thunder (2004).

Beyond acting, Frank pursued mixed martial arts. He signed with a sports marketing and management company in 2009 and began competing in MMA the following year. He made his amateur MMA debut in January 2010 and won his first professional bout in August 2010. Over the course of his fighting career he recorded multiple wins at the amateur level and at least one professional victory. He also fought in organizations such as Ultimate Warrior Challenge.

Martial arts and teaching

Frank trained in a wide range of combat systems and held high ranks in multiple disciplines. He was ranked as an 8th dan in Shotokan Karate and earned black belts in Wado‑ryu Karate, Taekwondo and Judo. He held a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu‑Jitsu and was certified as a Muay Thai master instructor. Drawing on many styles, he developed his own approach to American Karate, which he called Toso Kune Do.

Recognition and records

Over the years Frank accumulated numerous awards and honours from martial arts organizations, including Hall of Fame recognitions and industry awards. In 2013 he set a Guinness World Record during a skydive for breaking multiple one‑inch pine boards while in freefall.

Personal life

Frank was married twice. His first marriage, to Shawna, began in 1994 and ended in 2001. He later married Tammie in 2003; that marriage was reported to be dissolved in 2022. He had four children: three with his first wife (Hunter, Jacob and Skye) and one daughter, Jenna, with his second wife. His parents were Ray Frank, a U.S. Air Force veteran who died in 2021, and Janice Christine Soter, who died in 2017. He also had a brother, Erik Ray Frank, who died in 2001.

Frank maintained a strong connection to the Power Rangers fan community, appearing as himself in the Apple TV web series My Morphing Life from 2014 through 2022 and participating in fan‑driven projects. In 2020 he launched a Kickstarter campaign for what became the feature film Legend of the White Dragon, in which he played Erik Reed / White Dragon; filming completed in 2021 with a planned release target in 2023.
