John Rao Prakash Rao Janumala was born on 14 August 1957 in Kanigiri, Andhra Pradesh, and raised in a Telugu Christian family. His father worked as an operator at Hindustan Lever Ltd. Financial hardship curtailed his formal education after the seventh grade. As a youngster in Mumbai, he supported himself by doing odd jobs, including selling pens while entertaining people with impressions of film stars. His mimicry skills earned him the nickname Johnny Lever after an office function at Hindustan Lever where senior staff were parodied.

Lever developed his comedic craft performing with orchestras and joining shows linked to the Kalyanji-Anandji musical duo. He also worked for Hindustan Lever Ltd until 1981, when earnings from stage performances enabled him to leave the company and pursue entertainment full time.
