Early life and background

Kanak Rele was born on 11 June 1937 in Gujarat, British India. As a child she spent formative years in Shantiniketan, where she learned music and dance and attended Patha Bhavan. She lost her father when she was an infant and moved with her mother and uncle. At around age ten she contracted polio but recovered while pursuing dance training.

Rele studied widely: she earned an LLB from Government Law College, Mumbai; completed a master's in international law with a civil aviation emphasis at Manchester University; and later obtained a PhD in dance from the University of Mumbai. Her doctoral thesis focused on Mohiniyattam and examined its influences and multiple aspects.

Career

Trained in several classical styles, Rele learned Bharatanatyam from Nanna Kasar and Kittapa Pillai and received instruction in Kathakali from Panchali Karunakara Panicker, who introduced her to Mohiniyattam. Her grounding in Kathakali eased her adaptation to the lyrical and expressive Mohiniyattam tradition.

In 1967 Rele founded Nalanda Dance Academy in Bombay, which later became the Nalanda Dance Research Centre. In 1972 she established Nalanda Nritya Kala Mahavidyalaya, the first college for dance affiliated with the University of Mumbai. The institute produced the documentary Nritya Bharati, which was adopted by the Ministry of External Affairs as an official film for Indian missions abroad. Other choreographic works from the institute include The Enlightened One — Gautama Buddha, a production that premiered in 2011.

Rele combined performance, scholarship and pedagogy throughout her career. She published Mohini Attam — The Lyrical Dance (first edition 1992; revised edition 2013) and authored Bhaava Niroopanna (1996). In May 2022 she released a memoir titled Me & My Mohini Attam.

Her choreographic portfolio included works such as Kubja, Kalyani, Silappadikaaram and Swapnavasavadattam. Rele was noted for revising conventional Mohiniyattam themes by emphasizing strong female protagonists and for modernizing mythological narratives. Her collaborations with poet-scholar Kavalam Narayana Panicker brought Sopana Sangeetham influences into her choreography and inspired pieces that addressed women's experiences through mythic material.

Rele also explored interdisciplinary forms; she created performances that combined dance, vocal music and instrumentation and at times blended idioms — once combining Bharatanatyam and Mohiniyattam to portray a Tagore character. She was known for her scholarly approach to practice and for presenting abhinaya work with concentrated emotional clarity.

Recognition and roles

Over decades of work she received many of India's prominent honours: the Nritya Choodamani (1978), the Sahitya Gaurav Puraskar (1989), the Padma Shri (1990), the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (1994), a Vice President's Citation and the Sarangdev Fellowship (1995), the title Kala Vipanchee (2005), Kalidas Samman (2006) and the Padma Bhushan (2013). She was also awarded honours such as Kala Ratna and Suvarna Kankanam for her contributions to Mohiniyattam.

Beyond performance and teaching, Rele served in a variety of institutional roles: she was dean of the faculty of fine arts and a member of the executive council at the University of Mumbai, a trustee of the Prince of Wales Museum, a member of expert panels for the University Grants Commission and the Indian Council for Cultural Relations, and an advisor on dance to the Planning Commission of the Government of India. She delivered lecture-demonstrations for institutions including Kerala Kalamandalam.

Public profile

Rele recollected several memorable moments from her performing career, including praise from Rukmini Devi and an encouraging remark from Indira Gandhi after a performance in New Delhi. She also faced controversy when a group of critics questioned the authenticity of her PhD after she became India's first dance scholar to receive that degree in 1977; the episode led to protests during a planned television feature but did not prevent her work from being shown once her research guide intervened.
