Early life and backgroundLokesh Verma was born on 12 May 1983 in Delhi, India. Raised in a family where his father served in the Indian Army and later worked in security and his mother taught in school, Lokesh grew up with modest means. He and his sister attended schooling in Delhi and other parts of India. From a young age he enjoyed drawing and won a painting competition sponsored by Mitsubishi at age 14.
Lokesh completed a BCom at Sri Aurobindo College in New Delhi and went on to pursue further studies, including an AAS in Design and Applied Arts at Bangalore University and post-graduate marketing studies at Wigan and Leigh College, Bengaluru. He also completed an MBA. While in college he balanced studies and work, holding several jobs to support himself and to save for his first tattoo machine.
Career
Lokesh’s entry into tattooing began with self-teaching and practice. He bought his first tattoo machine after working a variety of jobs, including outlets such as McDonald’s and nights as a DJ, and initially practised on friends and family. His first tattoo experiments included work on his father’s arm and on his own body. By the mid-2000s demand for his work grew and he began working from a friend’s home and later a small salon in Vasant Vihar.
In 2008 he opened his first studio, Devil’z Tattooz, in GK1, New Delhi. Over the following years he expanded the brand with additional studios in Gurgaon (opened 2013), Dwarka (opened 2021) and an international presence in Luxembourg. Lokesh has worked in around 15 countries and established studio standards that follow European guidelines.
As an artist he is credited with bringing innovations such as soundwave tattoos to India and has been active on the convention circuit, learning from international peers and teaching others. He has trained and mentored more than 100 aspiring tattoo artists, many of whom now work with him across his studios.
Lokesh has refined his craft at notable international studios, including Paul Booth’s Last Rites Tattoo Gallery in New York, Nikko Hurtado’s Black Anchor Tattoo in Hollywood, Off the Map in Massachusetts, Tommy Lee’s Monsters Tattoo in Cologne, Heaven of Colours in Switzerland, and Alex de Pase Tattoo in Italy.
Awards and milestones in his career include multiple festival wins at the Goa Tattoo Festival (a Black and Gray Large award in 2008 and a Best Black and Gray Small award in 2017), the Best Male Tattoo Artist Award at the Indian Tattoo Awards in 2014, and a Guinness World Record in 2021 for inking the maximum number of flags on a human. He is also one of the first Asian artists invited to lecture at the Academie Tier Polo, a university focused on tattooing and fine arts, and in 2019 became the first Asian invited to lecture at that institution in Italy.
