Early life and background

Madhu Mantena was born on 8 May 1975 in Hyderabad, then part of Andhra Pradesh. He grew up in the city and attended Hyderabad Public School. His father, Murari Raju Mantena, ran a factory where Madhu gained early exposure to manufacturing work as a teenager. He has a sister and counts filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma among his extended relatives.

Career

Mantena began his film career working in Telugu cinema; his debut as a producer came with the 2003 Telugu film Karthik. He later moved into Hindi cinema and produced the 2008 Bollywood version of Ghajini, which brought him wider recognition.

Over time Mantena built a varied career in the Indian entertainment industry, moving between roles in music, film and media. He started a music label early on and later sold it. With the backing of industry figures such as Manmohan Shetty, he helped establish Adlabs’ international operations and subsequently served as Head of Saregama Films.

In 2007 he founded Big Bang Media Private Limited and held the position of Chief Creative Officer. In 2011 he joined Anurag Kashyap, Vikas Bahl and Vikramaditya Motwane to form Phantom Films, a production banner that produced several notable projects. After Phantom’s dissolution in 2022, Mantena and partner Sheetal Talwar acquired the Phantom brand and relaunched it as Phantom Studios.

Mantena has produced films in five languages, including Hindi, Marathi, Telugu, Gujarati and Bengali. His producing credits include commercially and critically successful films such as Queen (2014), Udta Punjab (2016), and Super 30 (2019). He was also a producer on the Netflix series Sacred Games. His projects have been recognized at national and industry award ceremonies: Queen won Best Feature Film in Hindi at the 62nd National Film Awards and multiple Filmfare honours; Ghajini was nominated at the International Indian Film Academy awards in 2008; Masaan received the Indira Gandhi Award for Best Debut Film of a Director at the 63rd National Film Awards; Wrong Side Raju won Best Feature Film in Gujarati at the 64th National Film Awards; and Ugly received a Screen Award nomination in 2015.

Mantena is the founder of Mythoverse LPP, a company announced to develop large-scale films inspired by Hindu epics such as the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. In 2023 he announced projects that included a film on the last Hindu queen of Kashmir, Kota Rani, and a Mahabharata-based film.
