Early life and backgroundMahesh Kishen Thakur was born on 1 October 1969 in Mumbai, Maharashtra. Brought up partly outside India, he completed graduate studies and holds an MBA. His formative interest in performance began during college, where he took part in plays and theatre productions. That early engagement with drama motivated him to move to India in the early 1990s to pursue acting professionally.
Career
Thakur made his screen debut in Hindi cinema as a supporting actor in the 1992 film Meri Janeman. He quickly branched into television, gaining attention with roles in popular Hindi series. In 1994 he appeared on DD Metro in Tu Tu Main Main, and his portrayal of Avinash in the Zee TV show Sailaab (1995) helped raise his profile in the mid-1990s.
The late 1990s brought Thakur wider recognition on the big screen when he appeared as Anand Pandey in the ensemble Rajshri film Hum Saath-Saath Hain (1999). He went on to play a variety of supporting roles in Bollywood, including parts in Humko Deewana Kar Gaye (2006), Aashiqui 2 (2013), Jai Ho (2014) and Velle (2021). On television he is remembered for characters such as Suraj Malhotra in Shararat (2003), Kamal Kishore Bajpai in Sasural Genda Phool (2010) and Colonel Yashvant Bedi in Udaan (2018). In 2004 he shared screen space with Sridevi in Malini Iyer, and in 2017 he took on his first antagonist role as Tej Singh Oberoi in Dil Boley Oberoi.
Thakur’s work expanded into digital and regional projects as well: he played a lead in the Bengali film Game Plan (2016) and portrayed Narendra Modi in the Hindi web series Modi: Journey of a Common Man (2019) on Eros Now. He has also contributed to theatre, staging productions from his college days through later projects performed in locations including Dubai.
Beyond acting, Thakur has moved into production and writing. He founded Kreative Flight Films Private Limited in Mumbai and became a director of the company in December 2019. As an author, he published the book I-Quotes through Popular Prakashan in 2021. He has appeared in national advertising campaigns for brands such as Lays, Muthoot Finance, Vicks, Kingfisher, Ensure, ICICI Bank, Manyavar and Kayam Churan.

Controversy
In September 2022 Thakur filed a police complaint in Mumbai alleging that a lawyer he had engaged in a property dispute had taken payments and then become unavailable. The complaint led to an investigation and registration of a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code; Thakur has described the matter as a financial fraud and said he could not comment further while it was under investigation.
