Early life and background

Malini Awasthi was born on 11 February 1967 in Kannauj, Uttar Pradesh. She grew up in a household that fostered a love of music; her father shared classical records at home and her mother encouraged her interest. Malini began formal lessons very early and by her early teens was studying ghazal, Sufi and folk forms with established teachers in Uttar Pradesh.

Her higher education combined musical and academic study. She completed post-graduate work in Hindustani classical music at Bhatkhande University in Lucknow and also earned an M.A. in Modern History with a focus on medieval and modern Indian architecture from the University of Lucknow.

Career

Malini Awasthi developed into a high-grade radio artist at a young age and established a presence on Doordarshan and All India Radio. Her training included instruction from noted teachers and she later counted Vidushi Girija Devi of the Banaras gharana among her important mentors. An early stage performance while she was at Bhatkhande brought her to Girija Devi’s attention; although family circumstances delayed an immediate apprenticeship, Malini later had the opportunity to learn from her.

Awasthi’s repertoire spans regional folk singing in Hindi and Awadhi, semi-classical forms such as Kajri and Thumri, ghazal and Sufi styles. She has been a regular performer at national festivals that celebrate Thumri and other classical and folk traditions, and she represents Indian folk music at cultural events abroad. Her international appearances have included performances in the Netherlands, Mauritius and the United States.

In the film world, she has contributed as a playback singer to a number of Hindi movies. Her debut in Bhojpuri cinema came with the song Jai Ho Chhath Maiya in Bhole Shankar (2008), and she sang Mann Ki Aasha for Bumm Bumm Bole (2010). Other film credits include songs in Agent Vinod (2012), Issaq (2013), Chaarfutiya Chhokare (2014) and Dum Laga Ke Haisha (2015), the latter featuring the track Sundar Shusheel composed by Anu Malik.

Awasthi has also taken part in televised music programs, including the NDTV Imagine reality series Junoon in 2008. She regularly appears at the annual Sufi music festival Jahan-e-Khusrau in New Delhi and performs signature Thumri pieces on stage.

Honours and recognition

Her contributions to music have been formally recognised at both the state and national levels. In 2006 she received the Yash Bharti award from the Uttar Pradesh government. A decade later she was honoured with the Padma Shri in 2016. Banaras Hindu University appointed her as Centenary Chair Professor in the Bharat Adhyan Kendra in acknowledgement of her work in Indian classical and folk music.

Public profile

Malini Awasthi is married to Awanish Kumar Awasthi, an Indian Administrative Service officer. The couple have two children, a son and a daughter. Throughout the years of raising young children, she maintained an active performing schedule, travelling for radio recordings and stage appearances while supported by family members.

She engages with a broad public audience through social media and live concerts, and she shares aspects of her personal interests online, including photographs of her pets. Her public activities also extend to environmental causes; she took part in a World Environment Day sapling-planting event in 2019 at the invitation of the then Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.

Malini Awasthi has been chosen as a cultural ambassador for civic events as well: the government and election commission of Uttar Pradesh named her a brand ambassador for the state’s elections in 2012 and again in 2014. She received recognition from the Indian Air Force in 2019 when the service conferred a medal on her.

Latest updates

During the COVID-19 pandemic Malini recorded and shared a folk song in support of the national effort; the performance was acknowledged by the Prime Minister’s office in 2020. She continues to perform widely at national and international festivals and concert series, and she remains active on social platforms where she posts music videos and updates about her performances.

Her public statements and media interviews reflect her commitment to preserving and promoting folk and classical traditions and to teaching and performing those forms for new audiences.
