Early life and backgroundMalini Mehra was born in India and spent much of her childhood in Kolkata. Her family has roots across northern and eastern India, including Lahore, Delhi, Amritsar, Kolkata and Himachal Pradesh. Members of her maternal family were active in the Indian independence movement. Her father, Madhav Mehra, worked with Indian Railways, served as an IAS officer and later founded the Institute of Directors in India.
Mehra studied in Kolkata at the Calcutta International School before moving overseas for higher education. She earned a BA in Government and Women’s Studies from Smith College in the United States and completed an MA in Gender and Development at the Institute of Development Studies, University of Sussex.
Career
Malini Mehra’s professional life blends sustainability, human rights and public policy. She founded the Centre for Social Markets (CSM) in 2000, an Indian NGO that focuses on corporate responsibility and climate change. Over the last three decades she has worked across international campaigns and institutions, including long-term engagement with the United Nations on issues such as sustainable development, human development reporting and disaster risk reduction.
Her early international work included campaigning at major global conferences, such as the UN Beijing Women’s Conference in 1995 and the UNFCCC Kyoto meeting in 1997. She has been involved in trade and human rights debates, and participated in WTO-related work in the late 1990s.
Mehra led projects for the UK government in the mid-2000s on international sustainable development and helped establish intergovernmental partnerships with countries including China, Brazil, India, Mexico and South Africa. She also served as an adviser to the UN Secretary-General on UN–civil society reform and held advisory roles for UN bodies such as UNICEF and UNCTAD.
In November 2014 she became chief executive of the international secretariat of GLOBE, the Global Legislators Organisation for a Balanced Environment, where she developed initiatives on treaty coherence, youth engagement, legislative–judiciary dialogue on climate change, gender equality and citizenship education. She has held board and advisory positions with a range of organisations and companies, including China Dialogue, the Global Reporting Initiative, Rugmark International, Hewlett-Packard, Kimberly-Clark, Tetra Pak and BHP Billiton, and she spent around a decade serving on Unilever’s top sustainability body.
Mehra has received several recognitions for her leadership, including being named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum, Asian Woman of the Year, and an Asia 21 Young Leader of the Asia Society. She has also been identified as a Principal Voice by CNN/TIME.
Public profile
Mehra has been active as a public speaker and moderator on climate, governance and gender issues. She has authored articles on women’s reproductive rights, climate change, trade and human rights, and has contributed to UN knowledge platforms. She is a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and has served as an ambassador for organisations including the Global Challenges Foundation and the Archbishop Desmond Tutu Foundation UK. In 2017 she served as Commissioner on Sustainable Development to the Mayor of London.
