He grew up in modest circumstances and took on work after finishing school to help support his family, including labor at a timber yard in Kallayi and selling agricultural produce. During his school years he developed an interest in performance, taking part in stage plays and later joining a cultural troupe that helped shape his early acting experience.
Career
Mamukkoya’s screen debut came with a cameo in the 1979 Malayalam film Anyarude Bhoomi. Over the decades he became a fixture of Malayalam cinema, appearing in more than 450 films in supporting and comic roles. His screen work included notable Malayalam titles such as Sanmanassullavarkku Samadhanam (1986), Pattanapravesham (1988), Gajakesariyogam (1990), Mullavalliyum Thenmavum (2003), Marakkar: Arabikadalinte Simham (2021) and Kuruthi (2021). He also worked in a few Tamil films, including Kasu (2006) and Cobra (2022), and appeared in at least one French production, Flammen im Paradies (1997), credited as Joseph.
Beyond feature films, Mamukkoya acted in television serials and other screen formats. His television credits included serials such as Manasi on Doordarshan, Cinemala on Asianet, Santhanagopalam and Akkare Ikkare. An animated Malayalam series based on a character he inspired, Gafoor Ka Dosth, aired on Jeevan TV in 2012. His parents were Chalikandiyil Muhammed (Mammad) and Imbachi Ayisha, and he had at least one brother, Koyakutty. He was known to have practised Islam and spent his life in and around Kozhikode, Kerala.
Later years and death
On 24 April 2023, while attending an event in Wandoor, Malappuram, Mamukkoya suffered a heart attack and was taken to a private hospital. He remained hospitalised for two days and died on 26 April 2023 at the age of 76 from a brain haemorrhage. Following his passing, public figures and fans expressed condolences; the Governor of Kerala noted his prolific career and the affection audiences held for his natural humour and dialect.
Latest updates
At the time of his death, one reported wish Mamukkoya had expressed was support for the creation of a large sculpture honoring Karinthandan, a historical figure from Wayanad. After his passing, that intention was publicized by an artist who had been in contact with him about the project.
