Early life and backgroundMangal Singh Dhillon was born on 18 June 1974 in Wander Jatana village in Faridkot district, Punjab, India. Raised in a Sikh family, he spent his early school years at Govt Sr Sec School Panjgrain, Kalan (up to class 4) and later attended Zilla Parishad High School in Nighasan, Lakhimpur-Kheri, Uttar Pradesh. He completed college at Government College, Muktsar and then pursued postgraduate studies in method acting at the Department of Indian Theatre, Panjab University. During his university training he distinguished himself as a performer and earned recognition for his theatre work.
Career
Dhillon’s career began on stage. He worked with theatre groups in Delhi and Chandigarh and founded his own company, Natyalya, in 1982. Over decades in theatre he appeared in and produced numerous plays, including early works such as Aaj Ka Jarasandh (1983), Baazi (1984), Sandhya Chhaya (1984) and Baba Bolda Hai (1986), as well as a later one-man production titled Theatrewala Urf Pagal Hai (1996).
He transitioned into screen acting in the mid-1980s. His television debut came with roles in the DD National series Katha Sagar (1986), and he is widely remembered for playing Labhaya Ram in the popular Hindi serial Buniyaad (1986). Other television credits include Param Vir Chakra (1988), Junoon (1993) — for which he received a RAPA Best Actor award in 1998 — and Panther (1996).
Dhillon’s film work spanned character roles in Hindi cinema and contributions behind the camera. His early film appearances included Khoon Bhari Maang (1988) as an advocate, followed by Kahan Hai Kanoon (1989), Naaka Bandi (1990), Pyar Ka Devta (1991) and Vishwatma (1992). He continued to act in features over the years, with a credit in Janasheen (2003) and a last noted film appearance as Lakha in the Punjabi film Toofan Singh (2017).
Beyond acting, Dhillon wrote and produced documentary and devotional films through his production company, M. D. & Company. Projects associated with him include A Day at the Golden Temple, Prakash Sri Guru Granth Sahib, Sikh Ate Dastaar, The Inseparable-A Sikh and his Turban, Sarvnash and Harinam Ke Chamatkar. He also contributed as a writer on several of these documentary projects and worked on scripts for films and television.
Dhillon published books in both Punjabi and English: Kujh Saddaran ate Chand Haunke and The Dark World of The Ghosts, and he compiled a Hindustani poetry collection titled Be-Tarteeb Jazbaat. In 2009 he launched a YouTube channel called Mangal Dhillon Channel where he shared spiritual and motivational videos.
Public profile
Throughout his career Dhillon earned multiple honours: the RAPA Best Actor award for Junoon, a Baba Farid Award from the Punjab government for his film Khalsa, an Outstanding Achievement award from the Chief Minister of Punjab in 2006, and the Mohan Rakesh Gold Medal for Best Actor. He was active in efforts to preserve and present Sikh history and spirituality through film and other media, and established a social welfare trust focused on spiritual awakening and education about Sikh heritage.
Dhillon’s personal life included a marriage to painter Ritu Dhillon on 26 April 1994. He had previously been engaged to actor Mita Vashisht, a relationship that did not culminate in marriage. His parents were Surinderpal Singh and Baljeet Kaur; he also had sisters Kiran Dhillon and actor Ihana Dhillon.
Later years and death
In later years Dhillon became more engaged in spiritual work and activism around Sikh history. He joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in 2015. He continued producing and promoting documentary films and advocacy related to Sikh heritage. Mangal Dhillon died on 11 June 2023 in Ludhiana, Punjab, at the age of 48. The reported cause of death was cancer.

At the end of his screen career Dhillon’s last listed film appearance was in the 2017 Punjabi film Toofan Singh. He remained involved in documentary production, writing, theatre and online spiritual outreach until his passing.
