Early life and background

Manish Sisodia was born on 5 January 1972 in Shahpur Fagauta village in Hapur district, Uttar Pradesh. He completed his school education at a government school in his native village and later moved to New Delhi for higher studies. He earned a diploma in journalism in 1993 and attended Bhartiya Vidya Bhawan in Delhi for further education.

Sisodia comes from a family with ties to public service: his father, Dharampal Sisodia, was a public school teacher and served in the Indian Army. He is married to Seema Sisodia; the couple wed on 31 October 1998 and have one son, Meer Sisodia.

Career

Sisodia began his professional life in the media. After completing his journalism diploma, he worked as a radio jockey at All India Radio in July 1996, hosting a programme called Zero Hour. In 1997 he joined Zee News, where he served in roles that included reporting, news production and news reading, and he left the channel in 2005.

His work in activism and public-interest initiatives preceded his formal entry into politics. In the early 2000s he co-founded the Parivartan organisation and later set up the NGO Kabir to promote awareness of the Right to Information Act. He was involved with India Against Corruption and played a role in drafting early versions of the Jan Lokpal bill. In 2006 he and others established the Public Cause Research Foundation.

In November 2012 Sisodia was among the founders of the Aam Aadmi Party. He joined the party’s Political Affairs Committee in 2012 and contested the 2013 Delhi Assembly elections. He was elected as the Member of the Legislative Assembly from the Patparganj constituency in East Delhi in 2013 and was re-elected from the same seat in 2015 and 2020.

After the 2015 election, Sisodia was appointed Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi in the Third Kejriwal Cabinet. As a senior minister, he held responsibility for a wide portfolio of departments including finance, education, tourism, PWD, power, home, urban development, labour, employment and public works. During his tenure as Education Minister and Finance Minister, he increased funding for public education in Delhi and led a programme of school renovations and upgrades, introducing modern teaching equipment and facilities and promoting initiatives such as large parent‑teacher meetings to strengthen school‑family engagement.
