Early life and backgroundManobala was born Balachander on 8 December 1953 in Marungoor, Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu. He studied painting at the Government College of Arts in Tamil Nadu and graduated with a degree in the subject. He was known to be religious and made frequent visits to temples.
Career
Manobala began his film career behind the camera, working as an assistant director on the 1978 Tamil film Kizhakke Pogum Rail. He moved into acting the following year, appearing in the 1979 Tamil film Puthiya Vaarpugal in a small role. Over the decades he built a prolific profile as a character actor, credited with roles in more than 350 films across Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam cinema.
As a director he led multiple projects in South Indian cinema and television. His earliest listed directorial work in Kannada was December 31 (1986), and he directed the Hindi film Mera Pati Sirf Mera Hai (1990). He directed several Tamil features such as Paaru Paaru Pattanam Paaru (1986), Dhoorathu Pachai (1987), Moondrezhuthil En Moochirukkum (1991), Annai (2000), and Naina (2002). On television he directed serials including Panchavarnam (1999), Punnagai (2007) and 777 (2009), and he also directed the telefilm Siragugal (2001) for Sun TV.
Manobala continued to appear on screen through the 2000s and 2010s in notable Tamil films including Gopurangal Saivathillai (1982), Gangai Karai Paattu (1995), Swarnamukhi (1998), Minsara Kanna (1999) and Sethu (1999). Later appearances included Nala Damayanthi (2003), Ethir Neechal (2013), Aranmanai (2014), Ghajinikanth (2018), and Murungakkai Chips (2021). He also worked in other language films such as the Telugu titles Punnami Naagu (2009), Manasunu Maaya Seyake (2014), Dega (2016), Rajadhi Raja (2016), and Mahanati (2018), and Malayalam films including Jomonte Suvisheshangal (2017) and Viddikalude Mash (2022).
On television, he acted in serials such as Alli Rajjiyam (2005), Maya (2018) and Sembaruthi (2020). He took part in the reality show Cooku with Comali Season 3 in 2022. Beyond acting and directing, he contributed as a dubbing artist for the Tamil version of the animated Hollywood film The Lion King, providing the voice for the character Zazu.
In 2019 he launched a YouTube channel called Manobala’s Waste Paper, where he uploaded interview videos with South Indian celebrities. The channel amassed a substantial following, with around 449,000 subscribers reported.

Manobala was married to Usha Mahadevan. The couple had a son, Harish Mahadevan. He was nicknamed Mano, stood around 178 cm tall, and had black hair and black eyes. His blood group is recorded as B+.
Health and final years
Manobala had a history of heavy smoking earlier in life, which he later acknowledged had harmed his health. He underwent angio-treatment in January 2023 and experienced worsening health by March 2023, when he was admitted to Apollo Hospital in Chennai and later moved to his residence in Saligramam. He died on 3 May 2023 at age 69; the reported cause of death was liver ailments. His final film credit listed is the Tamil movie Ghosty (2023).
