Manohar Lal Khattar Biography

Manohar Lal Khattar is an Indian politician and long-time member of the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. He served two terms as

Early life and background

Manohar Lal Khattar was born on 5 May 1954 in Nindana village in what was then Rohtak district (now in Haryana). He grew up in a family that migrated from the Jhang district of present-day Pakistan after the 1947 partition. During his childhood he lived in Nindana and later his family moved to Banyani village after purchasing land there.

Khattar completed his schooling at Pandit Neki Ram Sharma Government College in Rohtak, where he passed the 10th class and participated in debates and other extracurricular activities. He later moved to Delhi to pursue higher studies through the School of Open Learning at Delhi University and earned a BA in Economics and Political Science. While in Delhi he also ran a clothing shop near Sadar Bazar to support his studies and encouraged his family to relocate to the city when the business became profitable.

Khattar joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in 1977 during the Emergency period and became a pracharak in 1979 after Triveni Darshan. He served in organisational roles in the RSS for several years and took on responsibilities that included coordination with allied organisations and leading humanitarian relief efforts after natural disasters.

Career

Khattar entered active politics through the Bharatiya Janata Party, formally joining in 1994. He rose through the party’s organisational ranks in Haryana, serving as Sangathan Mahamantri and later as organisational general secretary of BJP Haryana from 2000 to 2014. In 2014 he chaired the BJP’s Haryana election campaign and was appointed to the party’s National Executive Committee that same year.

In the 2014 Haryana legislative assembly elections Khattar contested from the Karnal constituency and won. Soon after, on 26 October 2014, he was sworn in as the 10th Chief Minister of Haryana. He successfully retained his Karnal seat in the 2019 state elections and began a second term as chief minister on 27 October 2019.

Khattar stepped down as chief minister on 12 March 2024 and resigned his position as a member of the Haryana Legislative Assembly on 13 March 2024. In 2024 he contested and won the Lok Sabha seat from Karnal and was subsequently inducted into the Union Cabinet; on 9 June 2024 he took oath as Union Cabinet Minister with responsibilities for Power and Urban Affairs in the third Modi ministry.

Public profile

Khattar is unmarried and has publicly described his lifelong commitment to social and organisational work, a stance consistent with his long association with the RSS. His parents are Harbans Lal Khattar, a farmer, and Shanti Devi, a homemaker. He comes from a family with several siblings; one brother, Gulshan Khattar, is reported to have died in 2021.

Descriptions of his physical appearance in available records list his height at approximately 5 feet 6 inches (168 cm) with dark brown eyes and grey hair. His personal tastes include simple foods such as khichdi, upma, and uthappam, and he has named Narendra Modi as a preferred political figure.

Khattar’s public life has included organising party strategy in Haryana and Punjab and overseeing electoral planning for the BJP in the region. He has also been involved in relief work following floods and earthquakes and in efforts to coordinate activities between the RSS and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad.

Controversies

Over the years Khattar has attracted criticism for a number of public remarks and episodes cited in media reports. These include statements about court decisions and judges, comments made at public meetings that drew backlash, and several other remarks that opponents and commentators characterised as contentious. In some instances he issued clarifications or apologies after criticism.

Latest updates

After resigning as Haryana chief minister and as an MLA in March 2024, Khattar won the 2024 Lok Sabha election from Karnal and joined the Union Cabinet in June 2024 as Minister for Power and Urban Affairs. His move from state leadership to a central ministerial role marked the latest phase of a political career that spans organisational work in the RSS and two decades of active BJP leadership in Haryana.
