Manpreet Singh (Field Hockey) Biography
Manpreet Singh is an Indian field hockey midfielder who has captained the national side and led India to several major medals, including the historic 2020/
Early life and backgroundManpreet Singh was born on 26 June 1992 in Mithapur, a village on the outskirts of Jalandhar in Punjab. Raised in a Punjabi farming family, he grew up in a locality with a deep hockey tradition that included celebrated players from the area. His two elder brothers played hockey at the state level, and Manpreet began playing with them from an early age.
Financial challenges marked his childhood. His mother took on odd jobs when his father developed health problems that forced him to stop working. Despite early worries from his family about injuries, a modest cash prize from an early tournament helped convince his mother to support his pursuit of the sport. In 2005 he began formal training at the Surjit Hockey Academy in Jalandhar, one of India’s well-known hockey institutions.
Career
Manpreet progressed swiftly through the junior ranks. He made his junior international debut at the Junior Asia Cup in 2008 and captained India’s junior side at the Men’s Hockey Junior World Cup in 2013. That same year he led the junior team to gold at the Sultan of Johor Cup in Malaysia, guiding India through a run of wins that culminated in a 3–0 final victory over the hosts.
After overcoming a knee injury in 2009 that sidelined him for nearly a year, Manpreet established himself at the senior level. His senior debut came at the Men’s Asian Champions Trophy in 2011. He featured in India’s squad at the 2012 London Olympics and was part of the senior team that won gold at the 2014 Asian Games and silver at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
Domestically and in franchise competition, Manpreet wore jersey number 7 for both the national team and the Ranchi Rays in the Hockey India League. He was a member of the Ranchi Rays side that won the Hero Hockey India League in 2015. In 2014 he played for the BPCL team that captured the Scindia Gold Cup.
On 18 May 2017 Manpreet was named captain of the Indian men’s team. His captaincy brought a productive period for Indian hockey: India won the 2017 Men’s Hockey Asia Cup, took bronze at the 2016–17 FIH Hockey World League Final, and collected medals at several continental and global events, including bronze at the 2018 Asian Games, silver at the 2018 Men’s Hockey Champions Trophy, and gold at the 2018 Men’s Asian Champions Trophy.
The high point of his leadership came at the Tokyo Olympics (2020 Summer Olympics, held in 2021), where he captained India to a bronze medal — the country’s first Olympic hockey medal since 1980. He also served as India’s flag bearer at the opening ceremony in Tokyo.
