Early life and backgroundMaryam Nawaz Sharif was born on 28 October 1973 in Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan. She grew up in a political family: her father is Nawaz Sharif and her mother was Kulsoom Nawaz. She has two brothers, Hassan and Hussain, and a sister, Asma. Maryam was educated in Lahore, attending the Convent of Jesus and Mary and later studying at King Edward Medical University and the University of the Punjab. In July 2018 a court verdict in the Avenfield reference resulted in prison sentences and fines for members of her family: the decision included sentences for her and her husband as well as for her father. Maryam Nawaz married Muhammad Safdar Awan on 25 December 1992. Her husband is a retired army officer and a politician. The couple have three children: a son, Muhammad Junaid Safdar, and two daughters, Mehr-un-Nisa Munir and Mahnoor Safdar.
