Early life and background

Matheesha Pathirana was born on 18 December 2002 in Kandy, Sri Lanka, and grew up in Harispathuwa. He attended Ranabima Royal College and later Trinity College in Kandy. Raised in a middle-class family with a strong musical influence, several members of his household play instruments; Pathirana himself learned piano and sang as a child.

Pathirana first picked up cricket at home as a toddler and developed his skills through school teams and district representation. He supplemented his early development with time at the Kettarama fast bowling academy, where Chamila Gamage and other coaches helped shape his action. While still a youngster, he represented Sri Lanka at under-19 level and played in the 2020 Under-19 Cricket World Cup.

Career

A right-handed batter and right-arm fast bowler, Pathirana established himself as a death-overs specialist. He featured for domestic and franchise sides including SLC Greys, Nondescripts Cricket Club, Kandy Falcons (formerly Kandy Warriors), Bangla Tigers, and Desert Vipers. He made his domestic T20 debut for SLC Greys in the 2021 SLC Invitational T20 League.

Pathirana’s performances at youth level and in franchise cricket led to selection for Sri Lanka’s senior T20 squad. He made his T20 International debut on 27 August 2022 against Afghanistan in Dubai. In 2023 he was named in Sri Lanka’s T20I squad for a series in New Zealand and was also included in an ODI squad against the same opposition.

In franchise cricket, Pathirana was picked by Chennai Super Kings for the 2022 Indian Premier League as a replacement signing. He made his IPL debut on 15 May 2022 against Gujarat Titans, taking a wicket with his first delivery in the competition. CSK retained him for the 2023 season at his base price. He has also taken part in Abu Dhabi T10 with Bangla Tigers and appeared for Desert Vipers in the DP World ILT20.

Pathirana has had moments of wider attention during his career: a school-era bowling clip went viral and drew interest from established figures in the game, and his bowling action has frequently been noted for its similarity to that of Lasith Malinga.

Public profile

At about 6 feet 2 inches tall, Pathirana is known for a distinctive, sling-armed fast-bowling action and for his ability at the death. He wears jersey numbers 99 for Sri Lanka and has used numbers 81 and 99 in various franchise teams. He follows a disciplined fitness and workout regimen and is sponsored by GA Sports Meerut.

Off the field he enjoys music and travel, is an animal lover who shares photos with cats on social media, and counts pizza among his favorite foods. Pathirana follows Buddhism and his family remains based in Katugastota.
