Megan Schutt Biography
Megan Schutt is an Australian right-arm fast-medium bowler who has been a mainstay of the national women’s side and domestic teams since her debut in 2009.
Early life and backgroundMegan Schutt was born on 15 January 1993 in Adelaide, South Australia. She grew up in Hackham West and attended Hackham West Primary School and Wirreanda High School in Morphett Vale. Sport featured prominently in her childhood: she took part in school sports days, competed in shot put, and began playing organized cricket around age 11 when she filled in for a club match at Seaford. A SAPSASA scout and subsequent local coaches guided her into the Flinders University Cricket Club and, at 13, she began playing district cricket for Sturt Cricket Club.
Schutt progressed through South Australia’s age-group pathway, representing U-15, U-17 and U-19 teams as she developed as a bowler. She experienced a stress fracture in her back at 15 that led her to change her bowling action from out-swing to in-swing. She also worked briefly as a boundary umpire as a teenager before deciding to focus on playing.
Career
Schutt made her debut for the South Australian Scorpions in 2009 and established herself as a right-arm fast-medium bowler with a right-handed lower-order batting style. She earned her international debut in a T20I on 22 January 2013, followed by an ODI debut on 17 December 2012 and a Test debut on 11 August 2013.
She was part of Australia’s squad that won the 2013 Women’s Cricket World Cup, playing in all seven matches and finishing the tournament with notable bowling contributions. Domestically, Schutt has been a long-term member of the South Australian Scorpions and has represented Adelaide Strikers since the inaugural WBBL season in 2015–16. Her domestic career also includes stints with Nottinghamshire (2014), Supernovas (2018), London Spirit (2022), and Royal Challengers Bangalore (2023). She has worn jersey number 3 for Australia and number 27 for the Adelaide Strikers.
Schutt achieved several landmark moments for Australia. In March 2018 she became the first Australian woman to record a T20I hat-trick, a performance that helped her reach the top of the ICC T20 bowling rankings. In September 2019 she claimed an ODI hat-trick on the Australia tour of the West Indies, making her the first female bowler to take two international hat-tricks. She was the leading wicket-taker for Australia at the 2018 ICC Women’s World Twenty20 and again finished among tournament leaders in later global events.
Her tournament performances include being the leading wicket-taker for the South Australian Scorpions in the 2015–16 WNCL season, leading wicket-taker at the 2020 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup with 13 dismissals (including 4/18 in the final), and the top wicket-taker in the 2022–23 Women’s Big Bash League with 27 dismissals as Adelaide Strikers won the title. She reached career milestones of 100 WODI wickets on 3 February 2022 and 100 WT20I wickets on 21 July 2022.
Schutt has also been recognized in ICC and tournament teams of the year and was part of Australia’s gold-medal winning side at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. She was included in Australia’s 2022 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup squad that secured the title, and she was named to the ICC Team of the Tournament for the victorious 2023 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup.
