Mehuli Ghosh Biography

Mehuli Ghosh is an Indian air rifle shooter from West Bengal who has won medals at ISSF World Cups, the Commonwealth Games, South Asian Games and the ISSF

Early life and background

Mehuli Ghosh was born on 20 November 2000 in Kalyani, West Bengal, and grew up in Kolkata. She attended Techno India Group Public School in Chinsurah, Hooghly. From a young age she watched shooting competitions on television, and that interest led her to take up the sport formally in 2014 when she joined the Serampore Rifle Club.

Her early pathway to the range was not without difficulty. Financial constraints within her family made it hard to support training at first, and after an accidental incident at the Serampore Rifle Club she was no longer able to continue there. That setback affected her emotionally and she received psychological counselling with the support of her parents. She later moved to the Joydeep Karmakar Shooting Academy, where former Olympic finalist and Arjuna Awardee Joydeep Karmakar became her coach.

Career

Mehuli competes in the 10 metre air rifle discipline and has represented India at junior and senior international events. She emerged at national level with multiple medals at junior national championships, including a strong showing in 2016 and 2017 when she collected several gold and silver medals across different events.

On the world stage she has produced a series of notable performances. In 2017 she earned a Youth Olympic quota by scoring strongly at an Asian qualifying event, and she finished among the contenders at junior world competitions that year. In 2018 she won two World Cup medals in Mexico and went on to claim silver in the women's 10m air rifle at the XXI Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast, which raised her position in international rankings.

Mehuli continued to add to her medal record in subsequent years. She won gold in the 10m air rifle at the South Asian Games in Kathmandu in 2019. In 2022 she teamed with Shahu Tushar Mane to win the mixed-team 10m air rifle gold at the ISSF Shooting World Cup in Changwon, Korea. At the 2023 ISSF World Shooting Championships in Baku she won bronze in the women's 10m air rifle final, securing an Olympic quota place for India for Paris 2024.

Throughout her career she has trained under personal coach Joydeep Karmakar and been associated with national-level coaches including Randhir Singh.

Public profile

Mehuli maintains an active presence on social media and shares updates about her sport and life. She has been recognised at the state level as well: in 2019 the Chief Minister of West Bengal honoured her with a Special Sports Award. She was also named Female Young Athlete of the Year at the Sportstar Aces Awards ceremony in 2020, and she received an appreciation message from the Prime Minister for her performances.

Outside the range she is known to practise yoga to sharpen concentration and to enjoy activities such as karate, swimming and travelling. Her recreational tastes include listening to music, watching movies — particularly sporty, comedy and horror genres — and spending time shopping. She has said she likes homemade Chinese and Bengali food.

Latest updates

In 2023 Mehuli Ghosh won bronze in the women's 10m air rifle at the ISSF World Championships in Baku with a final score of 229.8, a result that earned India a quota slot for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Earlier, in July 2022 she secured mixed-team gold at the ISSF World Cup in Changwon.

Mehuli continues to train and compete while remaining involved with the Joydeep Karmakar Shooting Academy in West Bengal. She cites Indian shooters such as Abhinav Bindra and Joydeep Karmakar among her inspirations and describes a personal commitment to environmental causes, including planting saplings at home.
