Melanie Chandra was born Melanie Kannokada on February 28, 1986, in Buffalo Grove, Illinois, to Malayali Indian parents. She grew up in a family headed by Suresh and Sujatha Kannokada and has a brother, Manoj Kannokada. Raised in the United States, Chandra identifies as American and follows Hinduism.

Chandra attended Stanford University, where she completed a degree in mechanical engineering.
