Michael Richard Pompeo was born on December 30, 1963, in Orange, California. He grew up in Orange and attended Los Amigos High School in Fountain Valley. Pompeo went on to the United States Military Academy at West Point, where he graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering. After West Point he served in the U.S. Army as an Armor Branch Cavalry officer, rising to the rank of captain and performing duties that included patrolling near the Iron Curtain.

Following his military service, Pompeo earned a Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School. During his time at Harvard he was involved with the law review. After graduation he practiced law at the Washington, D.C., litigation firm Williams & Connolly.

Career

Pompeo’s career spans business, law and politics. In the private sector he was a founder of Thayer Aerospace, an aerospace manufacturing company based in Kansas; he later sold his stake when the company changed hands. He went on to be president of Sentry International, an oilfield equipment and services company that worked in partnership with other industry firms.

His political career began in earnest in 2010, when he ran for and won the Republican nomination and general election for Kansas’s 4th Congressional District. He won re-election in 2012, 2014 and 2016, serving on committees including the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence and multiple subcommittees focused on energy, digital commerce and intelligence matters. He also served on the House Select Committee on Benghazi.

In late 2016 President Donald Trump nominated Pompeo to lead the Central Intelligence Agency. The Senate confirmed him and he was sworn in as CIA director on January 23, 2017. In March 2018 President Trump nominated him to become Secretary of State; he served in that role beginning in 2018 and through January 20, 2021.

Pompeo has been a prominent and sometimes polarizing figure within Republican politics. He has been identified with the Tea Party movement and has been a vocal opponent of policies such as the Affordable Care Act. He has been a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association and has publicly expressed conservative positions on a range of domestic policy issues.

On foreign policy and national security, Pompeo traveled as part of his official duties and engaged with counterparts abroad; in 2017 he visited countries including Turkey and Saudi Arabia to discuss security concerns such as Syria and the group known as ISIL.
