Mohammed Siraj Biography
Mohammed Siraj is an Indian fast-medium bowler from Hyderabad who rose from street cricket to international success. Known for pace and accuracy, he has a
Early life and backgroundMohammed Siraj was born on 13 March 1994 in Hyderabad, India, and grew up in a family with modest means. He attended Safa Junior College in Nampally and completed his 12th standard. Cricket began for him in the streets and local clubs rather than in an academy; friends and family encouraged him to pursue bowling after recognising his natural ability. His father, Mohammed Ghouse, worked as an auto-rickshaw driver, and his mother, Shabana Begum, worked as a housemaid. An elder brother supported Siraj’s move into professional cricket.
Siraj joined Charminar Cricket Club under coach Mohammed Mahboob Ahmed, who brought him into structured cricket. Playing with the leather ball for the first time in 2014, he made an immediate impact and used his height and seam movement to take multiple wickets in early club matches.
Career
Siraj made his first-class debut for Hyderabad on 15 November 2015 in the Ranji Trophy. He quickly established himself in domestic cricket, finishing the 2015–16 Ranji season with a strong wicket return that led to selection for higher-profile fixtures such as the Rest of India squad in the Irani Cup. Across the 2016–17 Ranji Trophy, he finished as the tournament’s leading wicket-taker with 41 wickets at an average of 18.92, performances that brought IPL interest.
In the Indian Premier League, Siraj was signed by Sunrisers Hyderabad for the 2017 season, earning a substantial contract that season, and later by Royal Challengers Bangalore in the 2018 auctions. His IPL record includes being the first bowler in the tournament’s history to deliver back-to-back maiden overs in a single match in October 2020.
Internationally, Siraj made his T20 debut for India on 4 November 2017 against New Zealand, emotional as he represented the country and moved to tears during the anthem. He debuted in ODI cricket on 15 January 2019 against Australia and played his first Test match on 26 December 2020, also against Australia. His first Test wicket was Marnus Labuschagne, and he recorded his first Test five-wicket haul against Australia in January 2021 during the Border Gavaskar Trophy.
Siraj reached the top of the ICC ODI bowling rankings on 21 January 2023, becoming the No. 1 ODI bowler. He produced one of his most notable performances in September 2023 during the Asia Cup final, taking six wickets against Sri Lanka to help India win the tournament; that spell tied a record for the fastest six-wicket haul in ODIs in terms of deliveries with historic company.
He was part of India’s squad that won the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup. In recognition of his achievements, in October 2024 Siraj was appointed a Deputy Superintendent of Police in the Telangana Police and was offered a plot following the World Cup victory. In the December 2024 IPL mega-auctions he was bought by Gujarat Titans.
Style and on-field profile
Siraj bowls right-arm fast-medium and bats right-handed. He is known for using his height and seam to extract movement and for his sustained work ethic. He has worn the India jersey with number 73, and that number has also featured for him in IPL competitions.
Public profile
Siraj’s rise from street cricket to international stardom has been widely reported. He has been open about his background and the role of friends, family, and early coaches in shaping his career. Off the field, he lists listening to music among his hobbies and is a non-vegetarian. He follows fast bowlers such as Dale Steyn and Mitchell Starc as inspirations.
Controversies and incidents
During a Test in January 2021 in Sydney, Siraj was the target of racial abuse from a group of spectators; the matter led to their removal from the ground. In December 2024, during the Border Gavaskar Trophy, he was involved in a heated verbal exchange with Travis Head after dismissing him; both players were charged under the ICC Code of Conduct, accepted the charges, and Siraj was fined 20 percent of his match fees.
Personal life and public mentions
Siraj is unmarried. Reports of a relationship with actress Mahira Sharma circulated in early 2025; those claims were publicly denied by the actress’s family. Siraj’s family background and personal journey—marked by early financial constraints and street cricket beginnings—remain central to his public story.
