Early life and backgroundMohan Sirish Joshi was born on 4 September 1945 in Bangalore (then part of the Kingdom of Mysore, British India). He grew up in a lower-middle-class family and spent his early childhood in Bangalore before his family moved to Pune. He studied at Brihan Maharashtra College of Commerce in Pune and earned a Bachelor of Commerce degree. His father served in the Indian Army and his mother is named Maher Joshi.
While still a student in Pune, Joshi joined a theatre group and began performing on stage. After graduating he worked at the Kirloskar Group and later started a transport business, driving trucks himself for about eight years. He continued to act in theatre during this period and, after a road-transport accident that affected his business, he eventually closed the company and turned his focus fully to acting.
Career
Joshi’s roots are in the theatre. He rose to public attention through the play Kuryat Sada Tingalam, which he performed more than a thousand times. Over the course of his stage career he has appeared in thousands of performances across more than 30 plays, with titles in his repertoire including Aasu Ani Hasu, Gadvach Lagna, God Gulabi, Goshta Janmantarichi, Kalam 302, Mi Revati Deshpande, Tarun Turk Mhatare Ark, Double Cross and Aaranyak.
His film debut in Marathi cinema came with Ek Dav Bhutacha in 1983. Over the years he has featured in more than 70 Marathi films, with notable titles such as Sawat Majhi Ladki (1993), Tu Tithe Mee (1998), Gharabaher (1999), Not Only Mrs Raut (2003), Deool Band (2015), Mulshi Pattern (2018) and 66 Sadashiv (2019). For his work in Gharabaher he received a National Award special mention in 1999.
Joshi entered Hindi films in 1993 with Bhookamp, where he played the gangster Daya Patil. That appearance marked the start of a long run of character roles, frequently on the darker side, in mainstream Hindi cinema. His Hindi film credits include Gaddaar (1995), Yeshwant (1997), Ishq (1997), Gangaajal (2003), Baghban (2003) and Yeh Hai India (2017). He has also worked in Bhojpuri and Gujarati films, appearing in productions such as Janam Janam Ke Saath, Tabadala, Hareem and Hameer in 2017.
On television, Joshi has acted in a range of Marathi serials, including Bhairoba (2010), Eka Lagnachi Dusri Goshta (2012), Chala Hawa Yeu Dya (2015) and Kahe Diya Pardes (2016). His Hindi television work includes Jamuniya (2010), Dhoondh Legi Manzil Humein (2010) and Daadi Amma Daadi Amma Maan Jao (2020). His debut on Marathi television is recorded as Agnihotra (2009).

Beyond acting, Joshi has been active in Marathi theatre organisations. He served as President of the Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Natya Parishad, first appointed in 2003.
