Early life and background

Mohan Vaidya was born on 30 November 1959 in Purasawalkam, Tamil Nadu, and was raised in Chennai. He grew up in a family steeped in classical music: his father, K.M. Vaidyanathan, was a ghatam vidwan and his mother, Vasantha Vaidyanathan, was a vainika. An uncle who worked as a film composer also played an important role in shaping the young musicians interest in the arts.

Mohan completed his schooling at MCTM Higher Secondary School and later studied at the Madras Music Academy, where he earned a diploma in music. He trained in violin with Radha Sundaresan and pursued vocal instruction from several gurus, including Tiruvavur Sethuraman, Srirangam Ranganathan, K.C. Thyagarajan (with whom he studied in a gurukulam for six years) and Anayampati Ganesan.

Career

Mohans professional life has spanned singing, instrumental performance and acting. He made his television debut in the series Marmadesam in 1997 and his first Tamil film appearance came in Sethu (1999). He later appeared as Krishna in the 2005 Tamil film Anniyan and had a role in the Telugu film Seshu (2002).

Beyond acting, Mohan has performed as a vocalist for important dance exponents. During a period in Delhi he began singing for dancer Saroja Vaidyanathan and provided vocals for artists such as Swapnasundari, Leela Samson, Yamini Krishnamurthy and Bharathi Shivaji. Those collaborations deepened his engagement with dance and led him to study the art form himself.

Mohan has also worked in television outside of drama roles. He appeared on the cooking-themed program Sevikkum Suvaikkum, which blended ragas with recipes, and he judged the Zee Tamil singing competition Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge. In 2015 he was a participant in a celebrity cooking show, reflecting his interest in culinary arts.

He runs music and performing-arts schools in Chennai under the names Mohan Vaithya Anusham Academy and Sai Sishya Music Schools. Those institutions teach a broad array of disciplines for children, from various dance styles such as Kathak, Contemporary, Salsa and Hip-Hop to fitness and performance classes including Zumba, B-Boying, Locking and Popping.

Public profile

Mohan is often known by alternate spellings of his name, including Mohan Vaithya, and by the nickname Mayil. He has been publicly recognized for his contributions to the arts; at one point he was honored by former President A. P. J. Abdul Kalam. His family includes siblings active in music and other professions, notably Rajhesh Vaidhya, a veena player.

Personal life

Mohan married Sushma Vaidya; his wife later died in a train accident. He is identified as a widower. His parents musical roles were formative influences on his career. Mohan lists traveling and dancing among his hobbies.
